Trimming The Wings Of A Parrot Needs Extreme Care - Family - Pets

Copyright (c) 2010 Kaye Dennan

Trimming of parrot wings is a task that most owners don't like to do themselves. Parrot owners will most get their parrot's wings trimmed by a professional so that the parrot cannot fly away. A parrot is a bird when all is said and done, and birds fly! It is just a fact of life. To lose the ability to fly would be like losing the ability to walk for a human.

Most parrot owners prefer to ask a professional to trim the wings of a parrot as it is a job that needs to done correctly and with care so that there is no damage to the wing itself.

A Baby Parrot.

For the safety of a young pet parrot, it should have its first three feathers trimmed a little, but it is important that it can still fly a little because it does need to learn to land on its fee. If its wings are trimmed right back at an early stage it may never learn to land on its feet and that could be harmful as the bird gets older.

When a parrot is very small they only will have the first three feathers trimmed and then only half the length of what a mature parrot would have trimmed. The purpose of trimming the wings of a very young parrot is so that it will not fly into windows or other objects and hurt itself.

Wings On A More Mature Parrot.

An adult parrot which is much stronger has its first five flight feathers trimmed so that it is hindered but not stopped from flying. He is now a stronger bird so he needs more feathers trimmed to stop him flying away.

The utmost care should be taken to ensure that the feathers are not trimmed too short and most definitely not shorter thant the parrot's covert (the layer of feathers which protect their bases). Clipping of the feathers should mean that the feathers will grow out again, but if clipped too short it could mean that they will not regrow. If you are going to use a professional trimmer or vet who wants to cut below the cover, do stop them and find someone else. Make there is some discussion on this before taking the bird to be trimmed.

Usually a parrot will have its wings trimmed twice a year and this seems to be sufficient in most cases as regards the parrot care. This will still let the parrot fly around the house at ease without having accidents or causing accidents.

Why Get a Parrot As Pet? - Home

Ive had parrots for more than 12 years and I cant think of a more enjoyable pet to have than a parrot. In this article Ill explain to you my top reasons for getting a parrot and hopefully youll do the same.

Animals With Social Behavior:Parrot are amazingly joyful and social. When therere people around they are always happy and learning new words from whatever people say. Whether youre alone or in a family youll always have great company with your parrot. You guys who already got a parrot will most likely agree with me when I say that parrots are one of the best ways to start conversations in your home when you get a visit. Theyll always make people laugh and thus break the ice. Children love parrots too. Having a parrot in the home will teach children the importance of taking care of an animal.

Not Much Work Needed:Parrots are really great at taking care of themselves when compared to most four-legged animals. They dont need to be taken out for a walk every day. They simply need you to be around and pay attention to it sometimes. Cleaning the parrot cage is a breeze too. Once you have done it a couple of times you can clean the cage within a few minutes.

Inexpensive Food:Parrot food is really not expensive since their primarily diet is fruit and vegetables. You most likely eat roughly the same as them, therefore you can simply buy some extra fruit and vegetables the next time youre out buying food and there you go parrot food! Do however be careful regarding what you feed them. Some fruit is harmful to parrots so take caution.

Intelligent Animals:Parrots are some of the worlds most intelligent creatures. They got an amazingly ability to replicate everything they hear. Training a parrot is a great way for both your parrot to have fun and learn something. Once you got the training going youll be surprised of how quick it learns new words; sometimes without you even knowing! This is a great way to impress family and friends and have a good laugh. These were the best reasons I could think of right now. I surely recommend getting a parrot you wont regret it!

Teaching Your Parrot New Tricks - Family - Pets

Compared to other birds, parrots are among the smartest. When tested for their intellectual prowess they have ranked quite highly, mirroring the intelligence of a young child. Given this aptitude, many parrot owners decide to teach their birds tricks. As well as being entertaining, parrots that are taught tricks also seem to be better behaved and happier overall.

There are some basic guidelines to follow when teaching parrots to perform tricks. First, teaching sessions should be fairly brief. If the birds are overworked they will not enjoy the lessons and resist learning. The sessions should also use positive reinforcement and rewards for the birds, even if their performance falls a little short. Any noises and other distractions will hamper the learning process, so choose a quiet and private area. The room should also be very well lit, and comfortable for both your parrot and yourself. Be patient and kind when teaching parrots, any stress or negativity will result in sub-par learning.

A good beginning trick to teach parrots is to simply step up. It is an easy and practicle thing for your bird to learn, and will start the teaching off the right way. Simply coach your parrot to step up onto whatever object is in front of it. This can be done by placing your fingers in front of your parrot and gently asking him to step up. Your forearm can be used for larger birds. Food is always an effective reward and enticement for behavior. Have the parrot step up to receive a treat!

Another easy and common parrot trick involves teaching your parrot to turn around. Offer your parrot something to eat while shes standing on her perch. As she reaches out to eat it, rotate the food toward her back so she has to turn around to eat it. Some birds will do this quite easily, while others will need to be coaxed a bit more. When your parrot completes a full turn, food and affection should be offered. Many parrot owners encourage their parrots to speak to minimize the loud squawking that is part of the parrots usual vernacular. The vocalization of words is usually found to be more pleasant by bird owners. Start off with a simple one or two syllable word. You can start with your name, her name, or a simple greeting like hello. Repeat the word often to the bird, and she will start to mimic the sound. When the parrot responds, give her food and encouragement. The first attempts may be quite a butchered version of the word, keep in mind that the point is to get them to start responding to your voice. Repeat the desired word often until your parrot gets the pronunciation down.
