A few other food items happen to be toxic to wild birds such as chocolate or cocoa, alcohol, caffeine, avocado, guacamole, and mushrooms. Wild birds should also not include meals which carry a good sized quantity of grease, preservatives, food coloring, salt, sugar, in addition to other additives. What To Feed Your Parrot - Family

If you have never owned or raised a pet bird, an avian diet is completely different to any other animal. However like any animal they need to be fed a diet that is specific to their needs. I have a pet parrot, he would survive on a wild bird seed mix, but not thrive, we need to feed what their bodies were designed for and respond better to. I do not profess to be an expert but as you will read, I believe, the correct diet and love builds bonds to last forever

To keep a pet bird healthy and help him achieve his maximum life span he needs a lot more nutrition than seeds can offer. This is why my pet's food consists of an enriched pelleted formula, supplemented by fresh fruits and vegetables. He also gets some whole grains as well. To keep my Amazon parrot happy, Rico also gets healthy treats such as almonds and other nuts. He enjoys treats such as milletand honey sticks but only ocassionally.

My pet's food must also be fresh and free of crumbs. Rico also had access to fresh clean water at all times. The dishes my pet eats from are cleaned and disinfected regularly. This is equally important to my parrot's well being.

There are certain foods a pet bird should never consume due to toxicity. Chocolate and avocado are a few of the foods that are definitely off limits. Foods containing high levels of sugar and caffeine are also on my pet parrot's forbidden list. I love my parrot and I want him to be an active part of my life for a very long time.

Rico loves cooked oatmeal. I ocassionally allow him to have some because it is good for him. There's just one stipulation, according to Rico. He will only eat his oatmeal if it is served to him on a spoon. My spoon, from my own breakfast bowl.

It might seem extreme to some people who believe I am catering to a bird. I don't see out that way, however. I'm just doing what comes natural for this pet lover. Rico loves me for my devotion, this I know. He flew over to me moments ago, landing on my shoulder and snuggling against my neck.

Some people may think it is comical to watch me painstakingly hand pick my pet's food at the store. I admit it is often quite a show. To other bird owners however, it is nothing short of a labor of love. We all know and understand how much it means to choose only the best for ours beloved feathered friends. Sure we take our own sweet time sifting through the best birdie blends, but the end result is well worth the time and effort.

There is an avian gourmet specialty pet food store I like to shop at for some rare treats for my parrot. It is truly a tropical paradise and treasure trove of culinary delights for the parrot with discriminating taste. I do not mind admitting I have spent more than a few hours and more than a few hard earned dollars walking the aisles in search of Rico's favorite bird foods.

My reward for my labor of love as I hand select my parrot's dinner? No, it is not a sloppy luck on the face or a wagging tail. It is however, the sweetest sound to my ears when my lovable parrot greets me with his cheerful affectionate hello as I walk in the door.

Some pet parrots also really like overall wheat breads and unsweetened total-wheat cereals. You can also attempt feeding your parrot wheat, oats, cooked brown rice, pasta and barley to see if it likes any of individuals. So, to recap, many parrot specialists concur that a eating plan built up of 10% seeds, 50-60% high quality parrot pellets, and thirty-forty% contemporary fruits and veggies is ideal. On the other hand, like I reported earlier, no one is aware a parrot's excellent eating habits, but the previously mentioned appears to function most effective. As with any other sort of pet, Parrots ought to be fed the proper foods often. You may find that on coming property from the pet shop, your little one parrot will appear to be to have a weak appetite. This is a natural response to being in a new position and is predicted, so don't worry too substantially. A treat or two (crackers or fruit) will speed-up recovery of its appetite and at the similar time let it get accustom ed to his new property speedier. Feeding it treats consistently is a terrible plan nevertheless and not aspect of right parrot treatment as malnutrition is the number just one result in of loss of life among parrots. A suitable parrot eating habits is a balanced blend of seeds, hulled oats, spray millet, pellets and unprocessed combined nuts for their dry food and refreshing fruits and veggies for their wet meals. Bananas, apples, grapes, blueberries, grapefruit are some of the fruits that parrots like finest. Like humans, parrots will eat what tastes superior to them but that doesn't necessarily imply it's healthful. Creating guaranteed that Polly gets a accurate, effectively-balanced Parrot diet plan is in the end up to his operator and that requires fairly a bit of dedication. Wide variety is the crucial in maintaining your parrot pleased with his foods. As with folks, these adorable but delicate birds get bored and start out to have behavioral difficulties when t hey get bored with their diet. A great deal of new owners make the mistake of relying on pellets as a key source of nutrition for a parrot diet plan. Despite the fact that pellets are without a doubt more nutritious than seeds since they've been formulated primarily for these birds, they can basically have also substantially of some nutrients. Pellets can have as well substantially protein and this can bring about parrots to establish gout. Parrots can also get as well a lot iron and vitamin D in their process if fed a pellet-only eating habits. Also preserve in head that parrots by nature like to perform with their food, and seeing that pellets do not have husks, they will most probable get bored with ingesting this day in and day out. Timing is also necessary in a superior parrot diet plan. In the wild, parrots forage for meals early in the early morning and just before dusk. Feeding your parrot in the course of these occasions will be in line with his normal insti ncts and hold him happily pecking and munching absent. There are a a lot of different designs, sizes and hues of parrots but they all demand a balanced nutritious diet to dwell a prolonged and healthy and balanced living. In the wild or the parrots normal habitat of course this isn't a issue as parrots have progressed through hundreds and hundreds of many years to thrive on the foods found obviously and in abundance. The story alterations a lot even so when we converse about parrots that are stored as pets by individuals like you and me.

A Parrot's Eating plan - Other

Birds and other flying creatures are renowned for having a high metabolic rate and burn calories extremely speedily. It is consequently vital that they take in the appropriate food items to provide energy. Carbohydrates are vital and essential in significant quantities as they convert to power convenientlyIn my expertise parrots take in virtually anything at all! They need to have very similar nutritional vitamins and minerals to people and simply because of this are frequently fed leftovers from their owners very own plates. They have ability of being aware of what they are lacking in dietary phrases and will eat extra of these foods to counter the deficiency. I go through somewhere of a pregnant girl who had a craving for liver (some thing that she under no circumstances ate ahead of). Right after a go to to the medical professional it was identified that she as iron deficient and that her craving was replenishing the lack of iron in her entire body. This is a pattern am ongst all creatures. As properly as variety, feeding your parrots will greatly enhance their diet program. Quite a few people discover it very difficult to get their bird to consume a wide variety of meals, and the principal cause for this is that there is no feeding regime. Think me, parrots will take in all kinds of foods when fed at the proper periods. Suggestion! In the wild parrots certainly not have the option of eating cold meals for the reason that the place they live is usually hot. When you are striving to get your parrot to east a little something new, heat it marginally in the microwave. You'll be blown away at what an influence this has! (Don't be troubled about how considerably your bird eats. He could throw the meals away the very first time it is provided or he may possibly just just take a little bite. Maintain on providing it and he will quickly get as significantly as he requires.)So... when do you feed your parrot?Substantial research has been carried out in this place. One particular widespread blunder produced by parrot proprietors is to present a bowl of foods in the morning, at the very same time, in the identical corner, containing the very same food with a few extras supplied now and once more. This no very good for the parrot or your pocket as you will discover oneself throwing away a ton of the mealsOnly delivering one particular meal a day of blended parrot seed or pellets will in flip encourage your parrot to turn into selective and picky - eating what they want and trashing what they never. You will normally find unopened and uneaten seeds and pallets which recommend that you are offering your bird far also much.  An analogy I would use right here is leaving a kid in a supermarket on his own and tell him to get what he wants. Inevitably the kid will head straight for the sweets aisle and indulge in his favourite confectionary whilst the develop aisles go untouched! By feeding your small children their green s at dinner and only furnishing a plate of foods (not a full retailer) you are fundamentally forcing the boy or girl to consume the appropriate meals.

What Do Parrots Try to eat? - Other

At the same extent, supporters of the classic eating plan approaches say that the all-natural foods diets don't do the job, for the straightforward motive that the pet doesn't get the volume of exercise, flexibility and harshness he will get in his probable "wild" state, thus the pure diet program has no outcome. Parrots make no exception from the rule, as there have been numerous parrot nutrition disputes over the final number of ages, concerning the two types of diets. So how must a parrot proprietor go about this issue? Ought to you only feed him pure stuff these kinds of as weeds, leaf buds, seeds and fruit elements? Ought to you look at a commercial parrot food pack that boasts with having "all the nutrients your parrot needs"? Or should you check out a mix of the two? Whilst it is a make a difference of particular choice, one could conclude that a combination concerning organic and business meals is the greatest, seeing that it gives you every little thing a parrot re quires: tasty all-natural food and his day by day requirement of nutritional vitamins from the industrial supplements. When it comes to meals, parrots are not picky at all. Although they may well not enjoy almost everything you give them at to begin with, they'll typically get made use of to that food style in a brief while. Nevertheless, you should notice that not all meals sorts are nutritious for your parrot (whilst they'll nonetheless consume them). Meals keeping large quantities of salt can be really unhealthy for your parrot, considering that he won't be in a position to excrete all the salt. So prevent supplying him any mashed chips, dinner leftovers and generally anything that you've salted beforehand. Also, make sure your parrot doesn't get a single kind of foods on his daily diet plan. Consuming seeds may be tasty for him, but notice that seeds are not that healthy and they certainly don't have the required sum of nutrients a parrot desires on a every day basis. Some pet dietitians examine seeds with junk food, since they will be eagerly eaten by your parrot, but they're not the healthiest of possibilities. Nonetheless, seeds have a extremely functional use. If your parrot obtained employed to a distinct style of diet program and you want to swap to a more healthy an individual (but generally much less tasty) that he simply will refuse to eat at very first, it's a superior thought to "sprinkle" the new foods with some delicious seeds in buy to tempt your parrot to try to eat. As soon as they get the taste of the seeds, they will dig perfect in to the new foods style and at some point get made use of to it.The volume and style of meals your parrot calls for is also greatly dependent on his species and his size. Make convinced you check out distinct diet programs for him and observe which a single operates, since the correctness of the diet plan is specifically proportional with your parrot's lifestyle span. A good, healthful diet program can give him as significantly as an additional decade of everyday living, so if you care about your pet it is really a very good notion to make positive he will get what he desires from his meals.(c) Chris Bloor

Love Your Parrot? Learn the Benefits Of Organic Parrot Food - Food

Your parrot's diet is an essential factor in their life. What they eat affects all aspects of their health and development. Their health is obviously affected by what they eat because food contains nutrients to help them grow and thrive. But did you know your parrot's mental and emotional health is also affected by their diet? It's the same for humans. When we eat bad food, we feel bad. It affects our mood, our decisions, and our behavior, not to mention our health. And like you, your parrot will benefit from eating organic parrot food.

Organic Parrot Food Is Free Of Carcinogens

Many top level parrot foods have some serious chemicals in them - chemicals that have absolutely nothing to do with food or improving your parrot's health. In fact, these chemicals can and do cause cancer. Here are a few of the items found in most non-organic parrot foods.

* Ethoxyquin - this is used as a food stabilizer and a pesticide.* BHA - Butylated hydroxyanisole is a food preservative that has been shown to be a carcinogen (cancer cause).* BHT - Butylated hydroxytoluene is another food preservative and carcinogen. Both BHA and BHT are difficult for humans to metabolize and next to impossible for a parrot's sensitive system to manage.* Menadione - A vitamin K supplement is extremely toxic. It has been reported to cause anemia, brain or liver damage, or neonatal death humans and is toxic for birds and yet many parrot foods contain this toxic element.

Organic Parrot Foods Don't Contain Added Sugar

Would you feed your parrot sugar cubes? No, of course not, right? Sugar isn't something your bird needs nor does it improve their health, behavior or happiness. Yet most parrot foods contain sugar. They, for some reason, feel the need to sweeten the food. (Probably to cover up the taste of all those pesticides and preservatives.)

Your parrot doesn't need added sugar and good organic parrot foods don't contain any added sugar, flavorings, or food colorings.

Organic Parrot Food Lengthens Your Parrot's Lifespan

A seed based diet is too fatty for most birds to handle and it's short on nutrients. A seed based diet can cause:

* Fatty Liver Disease, * Kidney Failure, * Feather Plucking Issues * Overgrown Beaks * Blindness * Epileptic Seizures (Mostly Common In African Greys, And Cockatoos) * Inability to Fly* Chronic sickness

An organic pelletparrot food can lengthen the life of your parrot by several years. Actually, it can triple your parrot's lifespan. Why? Because it offers 100% nutrition without the unnecessary extras like fat, sugar and chemicals.

Organic Parrot Food Is Easier to Get Than Ever Before

A few years ago, organic parrot food was next to impossible to find. It was also incredibly expensive, not to mention the shipping cost was exorbitant. That's not the case anymore. More people are aware of the benefits making it easier to find.

If you want to offer your parrot the best you can possibly offer, organic parrot food is the way to go. It's 100% good for your bird and helps you give them the life, love and health they deserve.

5 Stages to Successfully Mating Parrots - Family - Pets

Adopting a parrot and caring for a parrot as a pet is much different and requires a different level of commitment than breeding parrots. Mating parrots in captivity takes a tremendous amount of quality attention to ensure your potential parrot parents are in prime health and to also ensure they have ideal surroundings and environmental conditions.

Parrot Health

In order to properly mate parrots, it is of equal importance to have healthy parent parrots to ensure healthy parrot chicks. The breeding pair should not be related in any way, and they should also be free from any outer birth defects, abnormalities, or illnesses.

Having your local animal health expert, breeder, or vet check out the potential breeding pair would be a good idea and would provide confidence to engage in breeding. Lastly, the potential parents should be at least one year old.

Cage Requirements

When mating parrots, their external conditions is very important to ensure they feel comfortable enough to mate in captivity. When breeding parakeets for example, the cage shouldn't be any smaller than 2' x 2' x 2' and should always have a wood nesting box that is at least 12" x 12". It is also ideal to have pine chips or some similar material at the base of the nesting box to have it as comfortable as possible for the potential parrot parents.

Diet for Mating Parrots

Mating parrots need special care and attention, and require a varied diet of seed, high quality pellets, and lots of fresh and preferably organic vegetables and fruits. Mating parrots should also be provided with cuttlebone to eat as well as some form of calcium supplement to assist in the development of the female's eggs, and to also help her gain back some of the lost minerals after laying eggs.

Incubation Period

Female parrots will lay their eggs soon after the mating process. Most parrot breeds have similar egg laying timeframes, with an egg laid each and every day until all eggs have been laid. Typically there are between four and seven eggs in each clutch, but this varies for every parrot.

Incubation timeframe is between 17 and 21 days, but keep in mind this is just an average and can occur a few days before or after, which is also normal.

Raising Baby Parrots

Depending on what your plans are for the little chicks will determine how you raise them upon hatching. If your intention is to train them as pets, then many parrot breeders will allow the parents to raise their babies until they are weaned. At this point, the breeders typically remove the babies to begin the process of interaction with humans. Generally speaking, most chicks are weaned by six weeks, at which point it is safe to remove them from their parental care.

It's definitely beneficial to speak with other people who have successfully mated parrots or join certain clubs with other breeders to discuss their approach. Most are passionate about mating parrots, and are excited to help. There is also much information on this topic on the Internet, but ensure whoever is offering their information is an expert in mating parrots.

The Facts of Quaker Parrot - Other

Should you want a bird who can speak, a Quaker parrot is the one you are looking for simply because parrot Quaker training is easy. It is a fast-learner, develops a bond with the owner and loves to be around people. Results could be much better if just 1 member with the family would teach a parrot how to speak. Even so, you are able to hear the chook imitating the other members of the family too.

Have you seen a Quaker parrot up close? It is a mid-sized engaging parrot, growing to around 1 foot in length. A Quaker parrots' top is bright green, its chest and face are colored white to grey, although as years have gone by and breeding has taken place, the colors have changed just a little

The family's pet parrot

Two things can describe the this parrot: affectionate to its owners and extremely gentle. This makes it ideal for small family members. Larger parrots on the other hand may not be because they become aggressive when mad.

Color

Originally, these Quaker parrots were green and white but because the species evolved throughout the years, and because of breeding in captivity, there are a variety of color combination and different shades, too.

Toys

An active parrot likes to play around with toys, especially if he is house alone or when there's no family member obtainable to play with him. A climbing gym, the ones with bells is a great example and will surely maintain him amused for a extremely, very long time.

Would you consider retaining a Quaker parrot as a pet?

This kind of parrot could be a very great pet not just simply because it's affectionate and gentle but it adapts well to different environments. This is a very large advantage when keeping a pet bird but we all know that if there's a positive side, there should be a negative side.

Some states don't permit retaining the Quaker parrot as a pet. Because it can adapt well, these parrots that have frequently flown away have caused issues in the agri-industry and that's why they have been considered illegal. Sadly, if these are found anywhere in the states, they will be killed. Check laws initial prior to thinking about buying a Quaker parrot, particularly if you live within the southern areas with the United States.

If you do decide to maintain a pet chook then you will discover parrot Quaker training easy because of its intelligence.

Parrot Diets Importance - Home

One of the most important parts of being a bird owner is the parrot diets. For more than 12 years Ive been a parrot owner and because of that Ive tried feeding my parrots with various foods. Some diets went good and some went not quite so well. Anyways, Ive leanred quite some things during my time as a parrot owners and thus I want to share my experiences with you in this article.

Premix all food that you feed your parrots. They are very picky eaters and therefore they will not eat everything unless you premix the food. Also, whether they like it or not bean and seeds are one of the most important parts of parrot diets. They must be feuded with this every day. Either cooked or sprouted. Some food such as navy and fava must be cooked before you feed your parrot with it.Remember to clean your parrots feed tray regularly, especially for old sprouted beans since they have a tendency to develop bacteria if they lie there for too long.

Whole grains are an important part of any parrot diet too. Feed your parrot with whole grains such as brown rich around 5 days every week.Fruit is a treat all parrots enjoy but only feed them with fruit a few times every week. Its important that they get more heavy food too such as brown rice. When getting fruit for your parrot, try to find exotic fruit that they would eat where they come from anyways. For instance, I feed my African Grey with dragon fruit. This is because my parrot originally comes from the African rain forests and therefore the food seems natural to it. Parrots prefer food from where they originates from.

During my parrot owner years Ive made lots of mistakes too of course. But I rarely do it anymore. I hope you learned something by reading this article. Have a good day!

African Grey Parrots Adoption - Outdoors

One of the most beautiful and among the easier species of parrot to keep is the African Grey Parrot. Originating from central Africa, they are highly intelligent and known for their exceptional talking and cognitive ability. They are capable of developing a large vocabulary and may be able to communicate well with their owners.

They are a medium-sized parrot growing to be about 10 to 14 inches in length. There are two different types of parrots. The Congo is light grey and has a red tail. The Timneh is a darker charcoal grey with a maroon tail. Typically the males are larger then the females. The males can be 12 to 14 inches in length. Although the appearances of both sexes are the same, Female African Grey parrots normally have a narrower head and a more slender neck.

These parrots also need an owner who can make a long term commitment to them. African Greys have a long lifespan and can live up to 60 years. Because of their high intelligence, African Greys require an owner that is experienced and who can understand their needs. They can easily become bored so, a stimulating and interactive environment is a must. Without their intellectual needs met African Greys might turn their boredom into behavioral problems like feather picking. Since they are such sensitive birds they can also behavioral problems. It's possible that even a small change in their daily routine or in their surroundings can lead an African Grey parrot to become cranky or show signs of self mutilation. Although they are typically well behaved and a great pet these birds do not come without a few challenges. African Greys that are undisciplined can get into trouble. They might chew wires or bite. They pick up behaviors very quickly so if you inadvertently reinforce bad h abits in your parrot, you can also easily teach them good ones.

African Grey parrots make great pets because they are very social birds. In the wild they will typically flock together. In the care of an owner a parrot will adopt this new family into their flock. They have been known to cuddle with their owners. Although they don't like intense physical contact they do enjoy petting and head-scratching. Experienced owners will not be put off by their bird's strange signs of affections. Regurgitation for a Grey is a sign of deep affection. They will also try to "kiss" their owners on the mouth. This is not recommended because the human mouth contains bacteria that is dangerous to birds. It is important for their owners to understand these birds's need for a companion. Those who becomes lonely may begin to vocalize excessively, pluck their own feathers, or they may start to bite. Because of these tendencies, African Grey parrots may not be good pets for a family who has children. Their beaks are strong and hard. Children may not understan d this behavior. These birds also use their beaks almost as another hand; a way to explore the world.

African Grey parrots are full of personality and human like qualities. Those who are lucky enough to own one are able to see intelligence not equaled in many other animals.

Amazon Parrots - Family

Amazon parrots (Amazona sp.) originate from Mexico, Central America, South America and the adjacent islands of the West Indies.

There are several species of Amazon Parrots. Some of the most commonly species are the double yellow headed amazons, yellow napped amazons, yellow or blue fronted amazons, orange winged amazons, green cheeked amazons, and lilac crowned amazons.

A healthy Amazon can be expected to have a life span of around 50 years or even longer with good nutrition and care and their size can range anywhere from about 10-20 inches in length.

The affectionate and loyal nature of the Amazon make this bird a wonderful pet for those experienced with companion parrots. Amazons are highly intelligent and require a devoted owner who is willing to provide significant and meaningful attention, as well as stimulus such as chewing toys to keep them happy and healthy.

Some males can become aggressive when they reach sexual maturity. Gentle dominance training is essential. It is a good idea to teach amazons to step up on a stick on command for those times when they are "over-stimulated." These birds require strong, patient owners who understand their moods. Do plenty of research on behaviour and training before buying one so you can build a strong foundation with the young bird.

The best talkers tend to be the double yellow heads, yellow napes, and blue fronts. Many of these birds can also become proficient singers. They are not shy and will often perform for strangers. Because of these characteristics, these parrots are often selected as performers in bird shows and at zoo's.

Generally, they do not develop feather picking problems the way many parrot species do, but they can if they are neglected, confined in small cages for long periods of time, and not stimulated with interaction and/or toys.

Caging

Amazons are quite active and very prone to obesity if they do not get exercise. The cage provided should be large enough to ensure that they get adequate room for play and exercise. Spacing of bars depends on the size of the species and care should be taken for smaller amazons to ensure that the spacing is not large enough for them to get their head through.

Diet

A diet that is about 25-50 percent pellet based, with the rest made up of a variety of healthy fresh foods is generally accepted as a good guide. Seeds are too high in fat for Amazon Parrots and while they can be fed as treats, they should make up no more than 10 percent of the whole diet. Nuts are a good treat, also in moderation.

Feather and Skin Health

Amazons should be showered regularly for feather and skin health. They can develop a musky odour that bothers some people, but most owners will need to get used to it. Regular shower's keeps the smell from getting too strong.

Noise

Most birds purchased young and properly trained and socialized will rarely vocalize to the point of disturbing neighbours, but generally they do vocalize at least once a day with loud screeches.

Some amazons can be very loud resulting in many older birds being sold because of the noise becoming a nuisance factor to others. They are not great pets to be kept in apartments for this reason and generally, the larger the bird, the louder the call. Amazons that have been kept with other amazons tend to be the loudest.

Sleep

At least 10 hours of dark, quiet sleep time each night. Amazons that do not get enough sleep can be very grouchy and aggressive.

With lots of love, care and an occasional trip to the vet (where flight feathers should be trimmed), an Amazon parrot will be a beautiful and entertaining companion animal for many years.

Blue Tit - Business

taxonomy a perching on a branch. this species was first described by linnaeus in his systema naturae in 1758 as parus caeruleus. most authorities retain cyanistes as a subgenus of parus, but the british ornithologists' union treats cyanistes as a distinct genus. this is supported by mtdna cytochrome b sequence analysis which suggests that cyanistes is not only distinct, but not close to other tits (gill et al., 2005). subspecies the systematics of the complex are unsettled. there are at least nine recognised subspecies: c. c. caeruleus (linnaeus, 1758), the nominate subspecies, occurring in continental europe to n spain, sicily, n turkey and n urals c. c. obscurus (prazk, 1894), ireland, britain and channel islands c. c. ogilastrae (hartert, 1905), portugal, s spain, corsica and sardinia c. c. balearicus (von jordans, 1913), majorca island (balearic islands) c. c. calamensis (parrot, 1908), s greece, pelopnnisos, cyclades, crete and rhodes c. c. orientalis (zarudny & loudo n, 1905), s european russia (volga river to central and s urals) c. c. satunini (zarudny, 1908), crimean peninsula, caucasus, transcaucasia and nw iran to e turkey c. c. raddei (zarudny, 1908), n iran c. c. persicus (blanford, 1873), zagros mountains the two traditional subspecies found in the canary islands (teneriffae) and northwest africa from northern morocco to northern libya (ultramarinus) are distinctive. the canary islands subspecies has a black cap, and the african form has a blue back. research is underway to split these populations into distinct species, with a peculiar "leapfrog" distribution (kvist et al., 2005; kvist, 2006; sangster, 2006): afrocanarian or ultramarine tit, parus ultramarinus bonaparte, 1841 (la palma, hierro, fuerteventura, lanzarote, nw africa) canary islands , parus teneriffae lesson, 1831 (tenerife, la gomera, gran canaria) the former would contain three or four subspecies (palmensis, ombriosus and ultramarinus/degener), the latter the nomin ate p. t. teneriffae and the unnamed distinct form of gran canaria. pleske's tit (cyanistes pleskei) is a not uncommon hybrid between this species and the azure tit in western russia. description the azure blue crown and dark blue line passing through the eye and encircling the white cheeks to the chin give the a very distinctive appearance. the forehead and a bar on the wing are white. the nape, wings and tail are blue; the back is yellowish green; the under parts mostly sulphur-yellow with a dark line down the abdomen. the bill is black, the legs bluish grey, and the irides dark brown. young s are noticeably more yellow. this is a common and popular european garden bird, due to its perky acrobatic performances when feeding on nuts or suet. it swings beneath the holder, calling tee, tee, tee or a scolding churr. the song period lasts almost all the year round, but is most often heard during february to june. behaviour blue and great tits form mixed winter flocks, and the fo rmer are perhaps the better gymnasts in the slender twigs. a will often ascend a trunk in short jerky hops, imitating a treecreeper. as a rule the bird roosts in ivy or evergreens, but in hard weather will shelter in a hole. s are very agile and can hang from almost anywhere. the has an average life expectancy of 1.5 years diet the is a valuable destroyer of pests, though it has not an entirely clean sheet as a beneficial species. it is fond of young buds of various trees, and may pull them to bits in the hope of finding insects. no species, however, destroys more coccids and aphids, the worst foes of many plants. it takes leaf miner grubs and green tortrix moths (tortricidae). seeds are eaten, as with all this family. learning an interesting example of culturally transmitted learning in birds was the phenomenon dating from the 1960s of s teaching one another how to open traditional british milk bottles with foil tops, to get at the cream underneath. this behaviour has decli ned recently because of the trend toward buying low-fat (skimmed) milk, and the replacement of doorstep delivery by supermarket purchases of milk. conservation populations often decrease considerably during harsh winters or after poor breeding seasons where the weather is cold and wet, particularly if this coincides with the emergence of the caterpillars on which the nestlings are fed. references ^ birdlife international (2004). parus caeruleus. 2006. iucn red list of threatened species. iucn 2006. retrieved on 12 may 2006. database entry includes justification for why this species is of least concern ^ (latin) linnaeus, c (1758). systema naturae per regna tria naturae, secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, cum characteribus, differentiis, synonymis, locis. tomus i. editio decima, reformata.. holmiae. Kigelia - Business

Etymology Leaf in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Flower in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Flowering stalk in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Fruit in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Bark in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The genus name comes from the Mozambican Bantu name, kigeli-keia, while the common name Sausage Tree refers to the long, sausage-like fruit. Its name in Afrikaans Worsboom also means Sausage Tree, and its Arabic name means "the father of kit bags" (Roodt 1992). Growth It is a tree growing up to 20 m tall. The bark is grey and smooth at first, peeling on older trees. It can be as thick as 6 mm on a 15-cm branch (Roodt 1992). The wood is pale brown or yellowish, undifferentiated and not prone to cracking (Roodt 1992). The tree is evergreen where rainfall occurs throughout the year, but deciduous where there is a long dry season. The leaves are opposite or in whorls of three, 3050 cm long, pinnate, with six to ten oval leaflets up to 20 cm long and 6 cm broad; the termin al leaflet can be either present or absent. The flowers (and later the fruit) hang down from branches on long flexible stems (2-6 metres long). Flowers are produced in panicles; they are bell-shaped (similar to those of the african tulip tree but darker and more waxy), orange to reddish or purplish green, and about 10 cm wide. Individual flowers do not hang down but are oriented horizontally. Some birds are attracted to these flowers and the strong stems of each flower make ideal footholds. Their scent is most notable at night indicating their reliance on pollination by bats, which visit them for pollen and nectar. The fruit is a woody berry from 30100 cm long and up to 18 cm broad; it weighs between 510 kg, and hang down on long, rope-like peduncles. The fruit pulp is fibrous and pulpy, and contains numerous seeds. It is eaten by several species of mammals, including Baboons, Bushpigs, Savannah Elephants, Giraffes, Hippopotami, monkeys, and porcupines. The seeds are dispers ed in their dung. The seeds are also eaten by Brown Parrots and Brown-headed Parrots, and the foliage by elephants and Greater Kudu (Joffe 2003; del Hoyo et al. 1997). Introduced specimens in Australian parks are very popular with cockatoos. Cultivation and uses In African herbal medicine, the fruit is believed to be a cure for a wide range of ailments, from rheumatism, snakebites, evil spirits, syphilis, and even tornadoes (Watkins 1975). An alcoholic beverage similar to beer is also made from it. The fresh fruit is poisonous and strongly purgative; fruit are prepared for consumption by drying, roasting or fermentation (Joffe 2003; McBurney 2004). In Botswana the timber is used for makoros, yokes and oars (Roodt 1992). Kigelia is also used in a number of skin care products. The tree is widely grown as an ornamental tree in tropical regions for its decorative flowers and unusual fruit. Planting sites should be selected carefully, as the falling fruit can cause serious injury to people, and damage vehicles parked under the trees. Synonymy Some synonyms are still accepted by a few horticulturists as distinct species, but botanical studies agree that the genus contains only one species (Joffe 2003, GRIN). Bignonia africana Lam. Certainly with a lifespan of 50 years, a bird could outlive you however there are many hidden dangers lurking around that can cut your birds life short. Birds are very fragile and need to be cared for properly in order for them to live a long life.

Here are some things you can do to help keep your bird safe and healthy:

One major danger for birds as fumes from chemical products. Aerosol sprays, Teflon pans and even such things as furniture polish can kill your bird. Keep anything that has a strong odor away from your bird and make sure you use it in a well ventilated area. I suggest you get rid of all your Teflon pants however if you insist on keeping them make sure your bird is nowhere near the kitchen when you're cooking with them and also be sure not to heat them up without food in them as this will cause the Teflon to emit more odor.

Pet birds love to chew on things and will in fact chew on anything they can find whether it's good for them or not. It's important not to let them chew on anything that is welded as they can get lead poisoning from the slaughter in the joints. They also will love your household plants and will nibble on them so you need to be sure that any plants you have are not poisonous to birds.

Birds love to eat fresh fruits and vegetables but you need to take care not to leave the fruits and vegetables out too long or they can start to rot. Just like you wouldn't feed a piece of pineapple that was sitting on the counter for three hours to your family, you shouldn't be this to your bird either. Something should never be offered to birds as food such as coffee chocolate and avocado as these are toxic to our feathered friends.

The holidays pose a special threat to birds as they may want to fly into your tree and chew on it. You need to be very careful with this, however as many trees are sprayed with stuff that is toxic to birds. In addition, the ornaments, tinsel and electric lights might seem attractive to your pet bird but, of course, could be very dangerous for him to chew on.

Birds that are allowed to fly around the house can be fun but you need to think of safety first if your bird does not have clipped wings and has free reign to fly wherever he wants. Obviously, you want to make sure your windows are closed so that he cannot get out. In addition, you probably want to pull down the shades or close the curtains when your birds flying around as you don't want him to fly into the closed window and hurt himself. If you cannot do this, then put some decals on the glass so that your bird will know not to fly into it. The same goes for Mariners or any reflective surface. This is very important as your bird can actually break his neck by flying into them.

Another thing to be careful of is standing water such as water in the sink or toilet you don't want your bird to get in over his head and drown!

Please refrain from cooking while your bird is flying around as you don't want him to win on the stove and burn himself.

Finally, make sure that you do not answer the door while your birds perched on your shoulder. Even a bird with clipped wings could get away in an updraft and their many dangers outdoors such as cats and cars that can harm your bird.

Feeding your bird a nutritious diet and keeping him safe may not ensure that he outlives you but it will go a long way to making sure that he has a long healthy and happy life!

Choosing Among the Best Exotic Pet Birds

Exotic birds are among the most popular pets to keep. Not only are they absolutely beautiful, with their brilliantly colored feathers, many pet owners find them easier to take care of than, say, a fuzzy cat or a rowdy dog. However, choosing among the best exotic pet birds is rather confusing because there are several species to choose from. Here are some of the most popular exotic pet:

Sun Conures C these birds are popular among the medium-sized variety. They grow to about 12 inches in length, requiring less living space than large parrots. The feathers of Sun Conures are tinted with brilliant hues of orange, yellow, red, green, and blue. Like parrots, Sun Conures can learn how to speak, however they can become quite vocal and noisy. They scream and screech and may not be ideal for those living in apartments buildings. Sun Conures usually live to around 20 to 35 years. Would you like to buy exotic pets?

African Grays C these birds are considered to be among the most loquacious among exotic birds, they can acquire a vocabulary of up to 2,000 words. These birds are also rather intelligent, but they can get demanding and easily bored. However, African Greys can also be quite affectionate - perfect for owners who want sensible companions. They may live from 50 to 70 years.

Before you go to the local pet shop and bring home a furry friend, think about your specific needs and wants about having a pet.

Budgerigars C these are the most common among the pet birds and serve as good introduction to owning feathered pets. Budgies can be good pets for children and are quite attractive with a great variety of colors. They also require a relatively small space, while being quite easy to maintain. Though they can typically learn only few words, they are intelligent enough to be able to sing and whistle tunes. Budgerigars may live from 12 to 14 years.

Parrotlets C these are among the smallest varieties of parrots. While parrotlets may be feisty they are quite intelligent just like their giant cousins. Parrotlets are also rather quiet compared to other exotic birds and thus they are ideal for owners who live in apartments or duplexes. The average parrotlet grows only to about 5 inches and lives to about 20 years.

Cockatiels C many find the medium-sized cockatiel as delightful pets. They also belong to the parrot family, and are known to be intelligent. Cockatiels usually just whistle or mimic random sounds, but they can also learn how to talk. They come in different combinations of color and can be quite attractive members of a home. Cockatiels usually live from 15 to 20 years.

There are many more exotic pet birds and it is best to consult with a breeder to find the best one for you.

In a recent discussion about pet safety, the services provided by a website entitled RecoveryPets.Com was compared to microchips and tattoos, and were they a better option to providing identification for pets. During this discussion a lot of statements were made and taken for fact, but here we will dispel some of those myths.

The Positive Impact of Parrot Trick Training - Family - Pets

Parrot tricks are primarily used to strengthen the social bond between the parrot and its owner as well as positively reinforce good behavior and supplant any unwanted behavioral problems. However the is a common misconception that if a parrot has bad behavioral problems already then teaching it to do tricks will cure this bad behavior, this just isn't correct.

In order to effectively teach a parrot to do tricks they must already be at least tamed and comfortable with human social interaction, you just can't effectively teach a parrot any tricks if you cannot touch your bird without being nipped or bitten or indeed if your parrot is weary or scared of your touch. The teaching process requires trust from both parties involved

Parrots of any age can be taught to do tricks but as with humans it is the younger ones that seem to pick things up a little faster, so the ideal parrot to teach tricks to would be a young hand reared parrot and another benefit of a younger parrot is the fact that you are working with less pre-formed habits to complicate the process.

The method that is widely regarded as being the most effective is that of 'positive reinforcement' which in the majority of cases involves a food reward after the parrot correctly follows a command. The reward could be as little as a scratch on the head or chest or positive praise or a combination of all of these, however the majority of parrot owners admit to using a food based reward. You have to put a little thought into what food you choose as the reward as you need to make sure that it is esasier to dispense and not too heavy or fattening as you will be dispensing a lot of food rewards as you teach your parrot each step of a trick and then reinforcing it. I have found that seeds make an excellent food reward but it is up to each individual owner as long as they follow the advice above.

In order to be most effective when teaching your parrot a trick you need to set aside some time that will be clear of distractions, choose a place that is quiet and where you won't be interupted and then after your parrot has become comfortable with the surroundings you can begin the training session. The session will consist of a lot of one to one interaction, mental stimulation for your parrot as well as lots of praising and food rewards. This will improve the relationship between you and your parrot and your feathered friend in return will be happier overall and this will present with improved social skills and an improved temperament.
