How To Give Yor Bird The Best Parrot Care - Family - Pets

Taking care of parrots involves some challenges but paying close attention to your bird and learning as much as you can will ensure that you know how to perform proper parrot care.

Mastering some basic parrot grooming skills are an advantage if you choose to own a parrot. Proper parrot care necessitates nail and beak trimming about every 3 to 4 weeks.

Your feathered friend will be much less stressed if you learn the grooming fundamentals rather than transporting him to a strange place to be handled by someone he doesn't know.

Be sure to keep up with your trimming schedule because long nails can get caught on a variety of things including toys, perches and furniture. Overgrown beaks are a hazard as well since it gets in the way of your parrot eating enough food to stay healthy.

In their natural habitat wild parrots enjoy "rain showers." These showers enable them to bathe and keep their feathers in good shape. Since your bird doesn't have access to this amenity he will no doubt be appreciative of a daily misting of water.

Very often an owner's parrot care routine will include wing clipping. This is done to keep their birds from flying. While flying can be good exercise, limiting their flight can help keep your parrot safe and out of trouble. Wing clipping is a personal choice and should never be done without first consulting a veterinarian.

Some of the things that draw people to parrots are their beautiful array of colors, their curiosity and sharp intelligence and loving personalities.

Whatever drew you to adopt yours, you need to realize that these are sensitive, social and long-lived birds, with some of the larger species living up to 100 years! You need to be ready for a lifelong commitment when you invite one of these special creatures into your life.

They are very social birds, living together in flocks in the wild, so they will need to spend plenty of quality time with you each and every day. Socialization is a major component of your parrot's mental and emotional well-being.

While you should make sure that their cage is placed in a spot where you can see and interact with them frequently, you need to be sure that it is kept out of drafts and away from the kitchen and areas where you tend to use chemical cleaners.

In fact, when you clean your parrot's cage, make sure to only use mild soap and water. Remnants of leftover chemical cleaners can irritate sensitive skin and eyes, damage your bird's respiratory tract, make him sick if he licks it and possibly even be fatal. If you are unsure about the cleaner you are using, once again, call and check with your veterinarian.

While we are on the subject of cages, make sure that there are no exposed wire ends or other sharp objects that can injure your bird. Also make sure that his cage is large enough to move around and spread and flap his wings.

Some excellent advice is to get the largest cage for your parrot that you can afford. There should be enough room for several toys and space to play with them. They will help keep your friend mentally stimulated and discourage the development of behavioral problems.

It is also very important not to forget to wash your hands before handling your parrot, his food, toys or dishes. You might think I say this to protect your health, and yes, it does. But it is equally important for protecting your parrot's health! They can pick up bacterial infections from us and the bacteria in human saliva is a health hazard for your bird, so don't let him "kiss" you on the mouth.

Adequate nutrition is perhaps the most important component of proper parrot care. Though there may be some minor variations between species, most parrots diets are very similar.

Along with fresh water, make sure to feed a combination of quality commercial parrot food, both pelleted and seed, along with fresh vegetables and fruits. This will provide your bird with a balanced and nutritionally complete diet.

Parrots make outstanding companions. In addition to being affectionate they are also playful and highly intelligent. They will flourish in a home environment, provided their owners obtain the knowledge to understand and provide proper parrot care.

Quaker Parrots - The Orators of the Avian Race - Family - Pets

Also known as monk parrots or grey-breasted parrots, Quaker parrots are native to South America but have managed to make their home in some U.S. states and European countries, due to their hardiness and ability to endure temperate climates. They measure about 12 inches from head to tail and grow to about the same size as cockatiels. Quaker parrots are naturally green with grey chests, throats and foreheads. They also sport some blue coloring on their primaries and tail feathers. However, you may be able to find different colored quaker parrots that have been bred specifically to give them a blue, white or other different color instead of green.

Quaker parrots are incredibly intelligent and you can very quickly teach them how to talk. With the right training, you can even teach them to say things at appropriate times such as only saying "Good morning" when its actually time-appropriate. Quaker parrots are noisy birds and although they usually only communicate at a moderate volume, they will be whistling, chirping and talking all day long - definitely not a pet for those who hate excessive noise.

Amazon Parrots - Nature's Eloquent Chatterboxes - Family - Pets

Amazon-parrots are the best talking parrots that you can get as a pet and the double yellow headed amazon and blue fronted amazon are definitely some of the best and most intelligent of the species. Native to South America, Mexico and the Caribbean, the average life expectancy of amazon parrots is a whopping 40 to 80 years.

Like their name implies, double yellow headed amazons are green with bright yellow heads, although blue and lutino mutations can occur naturally. The feathers on their heads have the ability to rise up to make their heads look double their usual size when they are excited.

They are excellent at mimicking human speech and will learn how to talk very quickly. Their intelligence also makes them particularly good at learning tricks and their love of performance makes them a very entertaining pet bird to have. Although they need some daily attention, they can entertain themselves for long periods of time if supplied with enough toys. This makes them much less time-consuming than other parrots.

Blue fronted amazons are also incredibly intelligent and quick to pick up human speech patterns. The only downside of amazons is that they do go through a bluffing stage as they mature, in which they can become aggressive. However, they can quickly outgrow this phase through good training and handling and will become very fun and affectionate pets.

Like all amazon parrots, blue fronted amazons are prone to becoming obese if they eat too much and exercise too little. Therefore, it is important to let your parrot out of its cage every so often so that it can stretch its wings and work off some of the food you have been feeding it. You can also manage your amazon parrot's weight by cutting nuts and fruits out of its diet, or at least keeping them to a minimum.

Parrots have long been the choice of pets among bird lovers. The beauty of their colors along with their intelligence and long lifespan makes them an ideal addition to a home. And, when it comes to their care, well, it can be quite challenging at times. As an owner, you are likely aware that the parrot is capable of practicing a cause-and -effect manner, experiencing stress and depression, and just plain being a handful at times. However, their curious and bright side leads to a life of pure enjoyment. The parrot's environment is important. Create your home to be interesting and challenging for your parrot. Provide plenty of toys, play music, allow the parrot to fly around the house for at least fifteen minutes a day, and spend time interacting and socializing with parrot. Create a time for you and your parrot, where you practice tricks, pet the parrot and talk to one another. Parrot care is a daily upkeep- and the diet should be highly focused. It is important to supply an optimal diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds and nuts, parrot pellets and plenty of water. Feeding should be two to three times a day, allowing the food to remain in the cage for at least one to two hours. The feeding should be done in the parrot's cage in three separate dishes, one for fresh fruits and vegetables, one for parrot pellets and one for water. Ensure that the parrot's cage is a safe sanctuary for the parrot. This is very important- if the parrot does not feel safe, it will become stressed. The cage should be free of sharp edges and large enough for the parrot to expand its wings and fly around the cage. Keep your parrot's cage cleaned daily- this means all dishes, perches and fresh newspaper on the bottom of the cage. Bacterial infections are a concern with parrots; therefore, good hygiene should be followed. Use a gentle mix of soap and water to clean with, and always keep your hands clean when handling your parrot. Speak to your parrot in simple terms when you are training and never use more than one command for the same trick. Training should begin when the parrot is young. This is probably the part of raising a parrot that brings the most joy.One of the most important things to consider is the parrot is an lifelong companion and needs to be trained and cared for properly.

Guidelines for a Proper and Healthy Diet for your Parrot - Family - Pets

Providing a healthy optimal diet for your parrot is vital. Often times "Polly's " nutrition can be ignored as you slice up a few vegetables and fruits and provide seeds, nuts, and parrot pellets, and think that you are providing a well-rounded diet. The fact is, you should know a bit about nutrition, which fruits and vegetables you should provide in the diet, and what vitamins and minerals they require- being able to provide them through the addition of the parrot group of foods and supplements. An optimal diet is important, as not providing one can lead to infectious and noninfectious disease.Your bird should not be allowed to "choose" what they eat. Offer mixed vegetables and soft foods, and pellets at mealtime. When you allow a bird to eat only what they like, the bird can acquire a nutritional deficiency. A good way to prevent this is to have the same fruit and vegetable mix for one week straight. Balance the diet with a variety of colors, textures, shapes and sizes of natural foods from the parrot food group. These include proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and other essential minerals. Important vitamins include A, D, E, C, K, and B vitamins, which include a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits. The cage should have one for fresh fruits and vegetables, one for parrot pellets, and one for water. When you feed your parrot allow them the food in their cage for one to two hours before removing it. Exercise is also important for the parrot. Exercise should be included each day. The best exercise for the parrot is to open its cage and allow it to fly freely for at least fifteen minutes throughout the day.It is conflicting often times when you read the experts' advice on the feeding the parrot. You may read that parrot pellets and seed mixes are the best and should only be given to the parrot. This is due to the fact that many experts are concerned with owners not providing the essential vitamins and minerals through an optima l diet and the bird acquiring a nutritional deficiency.Other experts claim it is fine to have parrot pellets in the cage throughout the day. The best advice is to learn the parrot food groups and get a cookbook that will teach you what vitamins and minerals come from what fruits and vegetables. Be consistent and keep the parrot on a schedule. You should feed the parrot once in the early morning, once in the afternoon, and once in the early evening. With a good optimal diet, plenty of exercise, the proper love and caring, you will have a very well-adjusted, happy pet. Be understanding to your parrot, as they are temperamental and do have needs, just as the human- and be prepared to have many enjoyable years with your pet.

Understand the Feeding Habits of Your New Salt Water Aquarium Fish - Home

If you have a beginner salt water fish tank and are wondering what you should learn first to prepare for owning these exotic tropical creatures, it would be wise to first read up on the feeding structures of any fish you have considered buying. All salt water aquarium fish are different, they all have different ways of eating and they also have different foods they prefer. And due to the feeding and territorial behaviors of some fish, these habits might even determine whether you can house certain fish in the same aquarium together. This is why you must learn how a fish feeds before you add it to your fleet of salt water sea creatures.

Many of the species typically found in salt water fish aquariums have evolved highly specialized jaws, mouths and teeth suited to particular kinds of prey. This is one of the first things you might notice when you look at a new type of fish. Some salt water aquarium fish, such as the Butterfly Fish, have evolved protruding mouths that are basically like forceps with fine teeth to nip the coral polyps they eat. Parrot Fish have also evolved an efficient beak-like mouth that is ideal for scraping algae from the surface of hard coral. If you know this fact, you will know that you can have one of these in the tank to keep the algae under control.

Not all of the fish that you will likely have in your beginner salt water fish tank have such evolved feeding structures, but feeding habits should always be a big concern when buying new fish to put in your tank. You should understand what they eat, how much they eat, how often they eat, how territorial they get about their food and what you can give them that they would eat in nature. There is still much to learn about this fascinating group of fishes and the adaptations that have collectively made them such a diverse and successful part of the reef fauna, but their eating habits have pretty much been figured out.

When you know how your new fish eat, you can create a better environment for them in your new aquarium. It is one of the most important parts of this beautiful hobby.

Remember that parrots are and will always be one among the few cleanest birds. Also in forest or wild, parrots are known to use lots of things to make sure that they are neat always. Whenever parrots have been confined, they may not be able to use these things. Hence, it's up to you to ensure that the parrot should be kept neat and clean.

The significance of keeping parrot clean along with its location is not a thing that needs to be emphasized continuously. Remember always, that the parrot and owner both will be pleased to have a clean location. Maintaining a location neat and clean is not somewhat that is considered hard. Simply get an old newspaper or a hard paper and place it below the cage of the parrot. This paper is to gather droppings of the parrot. Ensure that the paper is free from any chemical or hazardous materials that can be injurious to parrot's health. Replace the paper consistently once it gets filled with the droppings of the parrot.

Another point to remember is that almost all the parrots are friendly. In reality, parrots are knows to be communal and collective in the way they live. A parrot will not be comfortable while living in isolation or alone. As a result, if you have just one parrot, ensure that you give lot of your attention to it. This should be done habitually. It is even better if you make it a daily program and spend some good moments with parrot. If you have sufficient time to give to your parrot, than you might well pay for another one so that both the parrots can live a good life. Remember always that if a parrot is kept alone, it will all the time have an inclination to do something out of impulse.

You need to ensure that you fed well to your parrot and change its food as many times as you can. Always remember that in the wild, these parrots love gathering and eating the mixed food. Try to copy that same way feeding when you have got a parrot. Mix a few fruits and nuts.

The important thing in having a healthy and cheerful parrot is not learning these guidelines. You should carry it out too. Always remember that your ultimate aim is to get a companion for your entire life.

Parrot's Health - Hobbies

Parrot 's Health

As a breeder you are responsible to use only healthy animals as parents. Please also be aware that some species may not always be good parents. In this case, the farmer take over parental responsibility by hand-feeding chicks. This is a demanding task which must have time and knowledge to manage.

Parrots should not be handled by force unless it is absolutely necessary. Do you need to capture and hold a parrot, it is important to get a firm grip over the back and keep the wings gently to your body with both hands. Smaller parrots can take in one hand with his head firmly between two fingers so it is completely at rest. Never hard on a bird, but with a good, firm grip. Never take hold of a wing or hold the bird in the feet, as this can damage the bird seriously. Wing Fracture is very difficult to heal.

">Breeding parrots must be in accordance with the species' natural needs. It is therefore to gain the most knowledge about the requirements for the breeding environment and nutrition for the species you choose to farm on.

Small parrots such as budgies, Lovebirds, etc. Nymfeparakitter breeds easily in captivity, while many other species are almost impossible to get to breed.

Klopleie - Normally you can not cut the claws on the parrots, but some species and individuals may require this. For long claws can be dangerous for the bird, then it can hang onto the netting, curtains, carpets or the like. Use a suitable klotang and avoid cutting the blood vessel that goes a little way out of the claw. Ask your veterinarian or other bird experts people if you are unsure of the procedure.

The bill normally need no maintenance. Some species and individuals may be exposed to excessive beak growth. A veterinarian must trim the bill on a regular basis.

Clipping of wing feathers - Some choose to cut approx. half of the wing stroke feathers, to keep the bird's flying ability. This is called the wing clip. Wing clipping is not advised, but may be considered in exceptional circumstances. It is important to think carefully and consult a veterinarian before you possibly decide to cut the wing, since the consequences of this varies from species to species. Wing clipping should only be performed by skilled veterinarian. Incorrect cutting wing feathers can give the bird major problems. A healthy parrot is curious, comes with sounds and want attention. Plumage is glossy. It eats well and is not emaciated, but not oily. One should not be able to know the sternum in particular. When the sleeping hides the head behind the neck feathers and is often on one leg. The eyes should be clean and clear, tooth and nail to be without shells drawings or lime coating. A sick bird is inflated on the stick, gives few or no sounds and breathing ras h and deep. Are the seriously ill sits huddled on the bottom. Then consult a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Other disease symptoms are runny eyes and nose. There is often a good idea to contact your veterinarian if this persists a few days, then it may be the start of serious diseases.

Mega Bacteria - Chronic wasting, protruding sternum, spit-up, loose and slimy stool could be a sign that the bird is infected with so-called mega bacteria. Veterinarian should be contacted.

Psittacosis (avir klamydiose) - Symptoms of Psittacosis is a runny nose and eyes, the bird breathing heavily and blowing themselves up, diarrhea and chronic wasting occurs. This disease is caused by a bacterium that can be transmitted between birds and humans. Do not have the intimate contact with a bird that shows sign of disease or when you have a cold. Contact a veterinarian suspected that the bird is sick parrot. If someone in your household will be exposed to heavy pneumonia and respiratory infection should be mentioned that one has the bird in the house, so that the patient in case checked for parrot sick.

Powerful spring felling or feather picking - The bird will lose or pick up of large amounts of feathers may have different causes. Protein deficiency, viral infection, zinc poisoning, boredom or nervousness are some.

Most cases of feather picking is because the bird is kept in a restricted environment that makes it unable to discharge the natural behavior. The bird then sits and cleans the feathers of boredom to the almost non-spring again. Some species picks up more easily than others, often one can also see that this is the species that are more active than others.

Some choose to use the collar on the bird, but this is completely wrong way to tackle such a problem on. One must find the reason for picking and do something about it, not only prevent the bird to pick up without knowing what the problem is. Often it helps with more space, more activation in the form of company with other birds or people, playing to spend time mm Do you experience problems with feather picking is recommended to seek the advice of a veterinarian.

Offspring can breed up to get a good upbringing with proper nutrition and later good home. Some parrot species are not so easy to sell, so you must expect to retain them for a while after they are independent.

Parrot Birds have been kept in captivity for centuries. Probably, the first parrot to Europe with merchant ships in the 1700s.In Norway, we have been breeding large parrots since the 1970s. Still many parrots imported from other European countries to meet demand in Norway.

In the wild parrots usually live in flocks or pairs. Most parrots can still thrive alone, provided that they receive much attention from the owner. Some species of parrots are very social and need to contact all the time. This applies especially to the large parrot that Macaw, cake doves, Amazons and jaco. These species is linked very strongly to the owner and they do not own. Often, it can therefore be an advantage if they have company of other birds of the same species. Note in this connection that some individuals do not like each other and should be protected against each other physically.

Most parrots can be kept in pairs if they are familiar with it from a young age. To put together two mature birds is not always easy, since the parrot defend their home area with tooth and nail. It is easier to put together a new pair if they also provide new volire or new cages for them, so that both are new in the square. ">Breeding parrotsis one of the most popular hobby in the world.

Lovebirds (love birds) of the genus Agapornis and Nymfeparakitter should always be kept in pairs or in flocks.

All parrots use in the wild much of their time to fly around, climb trees and look for food, early material, and partners. For the parrots will thrive in captivity, they must have the opportunity to exercise and activate them - every day. If the parrots do not get the opportunity to an active life, they can be fat and / or bored. A bird that is bored often begin to exaggerate feather care so that it is entirely carried on parts of the body.

As mentioned, most parrots live in pairs or in flocks, and they spend much of their time on social activities such as attending to each other. Parrots tend to favor one of the family members. Some can be so jealous that they can go to the attacks on other members of the family. This is important to think about for those who might be alone and would like to acquire companies in a parrot - what happens the day you find a roommate or girlfriend? Some parrots can bite hard down and is therefore dangerous for children. If there are children in the house it is recommended to keep the smaller parrots and to teach children that the birds can bite sharply.

Some of the species can give up powerful screaming sounds. The rainforest alive parrotuse of nature's powerful sounds to communicate. In a pet store birds can be almost silent because of the attention they get from customers in the store. Be aware that the sound level can be another of your own home. Think in this context also the possible nuisance to neighbors.

Large parrots can be 40 to 60 years old, while the smaller parrots such as parakeetsand dwarf parrots live from 8-25 years. If you acquire a parrot, you must therefore be prepared to keep it for a long time to come.

The price of parrots varies widely from species to species, ranging from a few hundred crowns to several hundred thousand. It is recommended to buy a young bird, preferably one that is hndtam and comes straight from the breeder. In addition to the parrot (s) you have to invest in volire or maximum live, fixtures, and proper feed. Prices for this vary, but count on relatively large expenditures on procurement of parrots.

Choosing a Parrot - Do you need a Parrot Breeder? - Family - Pets

If you are thinking about adopting a parrot then one of the first decisions after you have settled on which species of parrot you think is right for you will be where do you turn in order to get him or her. At this point you have 4 main choices and some are better than others. The choices are going to one or more parrot breeders, the local pet store, a bird rescue center and lastly and very rarely you may come across a private sale.

Generally parrots have a high intelligence and complex characters which is why we are drawn to them in the first place but this also means that they require the proper care and attention from birth, through their formative years and into adulthood to ensure that they grow up well balanced, healthy, happy and without behavioral problems. Parrots have a tendency to get stressed if there is any change in either there environment or day to day routine so the initial trip home after the purchase and the first few days in your home will be stressful for your new family member but there are steps you can take to minimize this.

The more information you can get on your potential parrot before you do adopt, the better with this knowledge you can facilitate the transition easier for your new parrot into their new home surroundings and routine.

If you choose the local pet store it is very unlikely that you will receive any real detailed information on your particular parrot as they will often not have any information available or you may be served by someone who is just working at the store for the pay check and actually has no interest in parrots or any other pets. Obviously this is not always the case and there are plenty of pet stores where all of the employees are knowledgeable and helpful but you as the purchaser need to be aware of all of the possible scenarios.

Another option is the local rescue center where you may find a perfectly healthy and happy parrot but you must take into consideration that you will rarely find a young parrot at a rescue center and their is a higher probability that the parrot will have behavioral issues resulting from his previous treatment, whether from poor care, diet or environment. Again this may not be the case but it is hard to have proof of the history of a parrot from a rescue center.

The third option which is very rare is a private sale from an individual which is similar to the rescue center option with the benefit of meeting the person who has cared for the parrot and have a chance to see the parrots' surroundings but again the negative here is the lack of experience of the private vendor.

The fourth option is to go to a parrot breeder to choose a parrot. You will have the option to question the breeder extensively on how they have reared the parrot, including feeding the parrot, from weaning the parrot, which needs to be performed by an experienced handler through to feeding solid food and the type of food chosen as well as asking when they introduced bathing to the baby parrot, the best time being when they are partially feathered. Another benefit of a reputable breeder is that they will often make themselves available after the purchase to answer any questions and queries that may arise in the first few weeks for you as a parrot owner.

Overall there may be merits for each of the options I have described for adopting your parrot but the major advantage that a breeder has over the other 3 is that you can have proof of the parrots history and you have access to ask all of the questions that you need to ask before purchase and in doing so you raise the probability that you will adopt a happy healthy parrot free of any behavioral issues.

Parrot Birds Tips - From What Dangers Should A Parrot Be Kept Away From? - Family

When you plan to entertain the most of your parrot, then ensure to keep it away from any dangers. One of the excellent ways to free your parrot from any injury is to put it in the cage. But, putting the parrot for full time in cage is not good for its health. Sometimes you may have to give liberty to the parrot so that it gets relaxed. At that time, your parrot might be frightened with some hidden dangers which it may be exposed to. So, you should be aware of those dangers to keep parrot safe. Some of the hazards are described below:

Almost all parrots get excited to feed when they get anything at home. This happens especially when parrot moves out of the cage. Hence, always remember that you left nothing nearby the parrot at your home as this can be harmful for its health. The parrots are also very receptive to smells. They react immediately towards it. Therefore, the chemicals with harmful smells must be placed away from the parrots.

One more thing hazardous for the parrot's health is water. But it is not water which you keep for drinking. The parrot should not be kept in the tubs or sinks. Be sure that this parrot does not move close to toilet. It may go under or die if it goes in the tub or the sink as it may not be able to come out from water. The parrot may release itself ones it falls into tub or the sink. However, if you don't reach on time and the parrot is not able to move out then it will eventually die.

One thing about the parrots is they are of very searching type. They would like to know everything that is nearby them. So, it is better to switch off the fans when the parrot has left the cage as the blades of fan can cause damage to the parrot.

Keeping some other pets at your home could also be dangerous to the parrot's life. The parrots don't feel comfortable in front of either any cats or dogs when they see them. The cats and dogs may be aggressive to the parrot and they may kill your parrot. So, remember that they always live a friendly and healthy life. You can attempt to incorporate each one of them into other's life. But if you don't get any result, it is good if you keep both of them away from the other.

If you give your parrot any kind of play objects then ensure that they are sturdy as the parrot may eat the broken pieces and end up with death.

Therefore, it is very necessary to follows all these instructions before you bring a parrot at your home. Also, if you want that your parrot should live a friendlier and happy life it is good if you follow all the above mentioned points to avoid the hazards. This will ensure the long and healthy life of the parrot.

Pets, Puppies And Parrots - Family - Pets

Pets have become a part of the American family. Hotels, airlines, vacation rentals have all jumped on board to make sure Fido feels comfortable traveling with the family. Online stores have sprung up to make shopping for your furry loved ones more convenient with such supplies as dog chews, Science Diet, toys, Pedigree dog food, and Frontline Plus medications for your puppy. These online stores are wonderful for those that work full time or have limited access to the big pet retail stores. Often prices are better online also.

I have a pet lover at our house who is always bringing home something to be cared for, nursed back to health or just to stay. He has brought home quail chicks fallen into a drainage ditch, an abandoned kitten found in a field on a rainy day, numberless injured wild birds but the granddaddy of all rescues was when he brought home a little iguana from his scout leader. The story was that if you keep an iguana in a small cage it will never grow bigger, well who ever came up with this story was either a liar or dumb.

Cage size can't keep an animal from growing or all small apartment dwellers would be short! Two years and three cages later, our little six inch iguana was pushing four feet! This was by far the most expensive pet we ever had, he was eating almost a half a head of lettuce a day, dry vitamins for his lettuce, UVB lights, heat lights, heating pads and rocks, humidifier, not to mention the price of the ever expanding cages. Luckily we were able to give "Mr. Iggy" a new home at a local veterinary school where he now lives in a giant rod iron cage happy as can be.

Pets, supplies, kids, adults, families, they all seem to go together. Take your dog along on vacation, order up extra supplies of Frontline Plus medication and dog chews for him while you are away. Have the neighbor feed the cat and birds, enjoy the little clothes and beds and jewelry for the furry and feathery loved ones in your life. Pets do add a kind, accepting element to family life. When the world is against you, your dog, cat and parrot can bring you comfort and joy.

Your Pet Parrot's Diet Should Have Variety - Family - Pets

Copyright (c) 2010 Kaye Dennan

Owning a parrot as a pet requires setting up a very good, healthy parrot diet so that the parrot does not become sick and die in just a few years. Parrots have long life spans. especially the larger species, and if you feed your parrot properly, you should enjoy many years of friendship.

Size of your parrot.

Getting the diet sorted out is not difficult to do. It is just a matter of listing a diet that is suitable to the parrot. Parrots of similar size eat similar diets, so the main consideration you need to make initially is the actual size of the parrot you have or that you intend to purchase.

For example, you most certainly would not expect an African Gray Parrot to eat the same diet as a budgerigar. Their size difference is huge and this will obviously affect the size of the food they eat. Larger birds can eat larger and harder foods like macadamia nuts because their beak is bigger, hard and much stronger.

Parrot diet variety.

A parrot loves to have variety in their diet. In his natural tropical environment, a parrot eats tropical fruits, flowers, leaves, fruit and nuts, so you can see how a range of foods is essential for his good health. Variety is essential not only for the health of the parrot but because if the parrot gets bored there is a good chance he will stop eating (just like we do if we are served the same food day in, day out), but also because it gives the bird a range of vitamins.

Vitamins in the parrot diet.

Once certain way to make sure that your parrot is getting a range of vitamins, is to feed it pellets. Nearly everyone who is involved in keeping parrots agrees that pellets are essential to the good health of a pet parrot, but where there is some discrepancy is the amount that it should be fed. Some say that pellets should be up to 90% of a parrot's diet, but others say that it should only be 30%-40% of the diet. This is something you will have to work out yourself and obviously as long as you are giving it the lower amount and it is eating a lot of other food then at least it is not starving. It will be a matter of adjusting the percentage of pellets according to other food that you will be feeding it.

Other foods to feed the parrot.

If you can find organic food to feed the parrot then he will be better for it! Your parrot will be so much healthier for being able to eat organic food. There is a wide range of food that the parrot will like, such as: mango, pineapple, kiwi fruit, melons, green peas and beans, cauliflower, corn, sweet potato and sweet peppers.

Having water available for your pet parrot.

Parrots need to have water available but it is not a good idea to have a bowl of water because once it is a few hours old it will start growing bacteria as food and droppings land in it. A water bottle is a much healthier way to give your parrot its water requirements.

Once you have decided what to feed your pet parrot, make a list so that you can try all the items out in your parrot's diet. You may find that some are not so popular, but keep trying them now and then anyway.

Ways to Stop Parrot Screaming - Family - Pets

Thank you for reading my article "Ways to Stop Parrot Screaming". You can find more articles in Pets Club.

Have you ever noticed that any TV shows with the rain forest as the background you hear parrots screaming? And then some of us go crazy when their pet bird does it in their home. It is the parrot's natural behavior. Parrots use screaming as a method of communication over large distances. This screaming is something that some of us have difficulties living with. A parrot with a screaming problem may be irritating to those who live in a house. But if you live in an apartment or close quarters with another house you undoubtedly may end being evicted or forced to rehome your parrot.

So, many of us have and will try very hard to stop their parrots screaming. Some parrots might scream every morning and evening until they have been fed. Others might yell when you are out of the room and they will only settle down when you reenter the room. Some birds may scream constantly while an undiserable person or object is in the room and only quiet down when that person or object is gone. In these situations, the parrots screaming is rewarded - by bird treats, you coming back to them, by the removal of the hated person or object. As with almost all learned behavior, the consequences of the actions are what either encourages us to continue repeating the behavior or convinces us to stop. The trick to stopping a screaming parrot problem: parrots will choose to do what is most rewarding to them. If your bird finds it more rewarding to scream than to remain silent or talk they will continue to scream. It is the owners job to reward good behavior and ignore the bad. It sounds simple, but it does take some effort.

The first step is to start paying attention to what you're doing when the parrot is screaming. Do you re-enter the room when they are screaming? Do you approach and give them a bird treat to make them be quiet? Do you approach and cover them in their bird cage? Do you feed them? Do your remove them from their cage? Do you play with them?If you answered yes to any of the previous questions you are rewarding the screaming behavior.

Step two, is to stop rewarding screaming by ignoring the bad behavior. If you always enter when he's screaming, stop. No more treats, food, playing or any attention while your parrot is screaming.

Step three is to pick a sound you like. It can be talking, whistling, basically anything you like that the parrot can do and be rewarded for. When they make that particular sound, you reward it. When you hear it give your bird a treat and celebrate. You are making that noise far more rewarding than screaming, after you constantly reward the good sound, they will quit their screaming.

Along with rewarding the good behavior and ignoring the screaming make sure your parrot has plenty to do. Offer plenty of Bird Toys and foraging toys to stimulate both the bird's brain and beak. Also make sure your parrot has plenty of time out of his bird cage and time on a Parrot Playgym or preferably with you.

Thank you for reading my article "Ways to Stop Parrot Screaming". You can find more articles in Pets Club.
