The Incredible Fauna of The Bahamas - Travel

Caribbean weddings in The Bahamas are popular for many reasons, but surely one of the highlights is that you get to see some truly incredible animals while you are there. Whether you head to The Bahamas for the pristine beaches or glorious weather, make sure you spend some time trying to spot some of the following animals as it will add something really special to your trip.

The Bahama Parrot

The Bahama parrot used to be present all over The Bahamas, but now it is restricted to just two locations: Great Inagua Island and Great Abaco Island. The best place for you to see the Bahama parrot is in the large Abaco National Park where they can be found in the southern part of the island in the pine forest. It is an attractive bird, with its red throat, green feathers and white crown, and records of its presence on the island date back to Columbuss arrival. It is now protected by the authorities and is one of the main reasons the Abaco National Park was created in 1994. It is certainly worth a trip to the national park to spot the parrots, and it is a popular outing for guests of those having Caribbean weddings in The Bahamas.

West Indian Flamingos

The brightly coloured West Indian flamingo is the national bird of The Bahamas, and one that you will see represented everywhere when you arrive. It is also a major success story of the island because the colony in Inagua National Park is the largest breeding colony in the world, with an estimated population of 50,000, even though they were brought to the point of extinction over the last century.

Hawksbill Turtle

The hawksbill turtle is one of the many species of turtle to be found in the waters of The Bahamas, and one of the highlights of the honeymoon for people planning Caribbean weddings. Other species include the loggerhead, leatherback and Kemps Ridley turtle amongst others, but it is the hawksbill which is the most endangered. It is found mainly in coral reefs and shallower waters, and the best way to spot one is to go scuba diving - they can be found all over the islands.

Great Hammerhead SharkIts not one youd want to see too close up, but for people planning Caribbean weddings in The Bahamas this is one of the most impressive creatures they are likely to see during their holidays. In the clear ocean waters surrounding the islands this large, solitary shark can grow up to 18 feet, and is noticeable for its very large dorsal fin. They are better to view under the water, but you might even be able to spot one from a boat.Other species of shark to look out for include the tiger shark, the Caribbean reef shark, the nurse shark, the bull shark and the lemon shark.
