The Fact On African Lovebirds - Computers

Background

You may be wondering how the Lovebird got its name. It was from the fact that they could sit there so close together and preen each other so lovingly. With around eight or nine different species that have been identified, these birds were first found in parts of Africa. It is believed that these birds were introduced into Australia sometime in the 1850's.

Since the mid 1900's, strict quarantine regulations meant that it was extensively difficult to bring these birds into the country from overseas.

Appearance and speciesThe African Lovebirds actually come from the parrot niche. Lovebirds can be very colorful and are just over 12cm typically.

In Australia, unfortunately only 3 or 4 of the entire variants to the African Lovebird species can be obtained. An interesting feature of these birds is that its actually quite difficult to distinguish between a female and male bird.

Typically, the four that can be sourced in Australia are the Masked, Peachfaced, Fishers and the less common Nyasa.

With over 50 different feather combinations, you are certainly likely to source an unique looking Lovebird. There is some simple terminology to distinguish the variety, with 'normal' being used to identify the first original colors. The other different permutations just use the color to describe it. For example, "Blue Fischer". The original colors are in higher demand across all the different species and price may be reflected accordingly.

Character

Often more belligerent by nature, the Peachfaced variety is typically a lot more social and extraverted as well. Be warned though, Peachfaced don't really like sharing their space with other members and could become aggressive. Having said that though, they do adore human attention and if compared with the other four varieties, this one could be the pick of the bunch.

You will want to also ensure that the cage you place them in is fully locked as these mischievous pets may enjoy the challenge to try and escape. To keep them busy, having something for them to chew on for long periods if they choose is a great idea.

Feeding

Typically, pet stores usually contain parrot mix or some even carry a peachfaced mix. With these mixes, typically millet and about six other seed variants are included. In addition to seed, your Lovebird will also enjoy some crisp fruit and vegetable that is cut up into small pieces, such as carrot, apple, banana, pear, melon, strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage or pumpkin.

General Health and Age

Outside temperate doesn't really phase these birds as they are very adaptable. Having said that, they are not good with icy cold conditions. In the warmer months, you will still want to ensure that they are not overhearing and plenty of water should be available to them.

Expect a healthy and happy Lovebird to have a decent live of between 8-15 years.

Homes

If you can spend a fair amount of time near the bird, a cage is perfectly fine. Clipping your Lovebird means you can let it outside the cage in the house to let it roam a little.

Suits.

If you are looking for a pet that is inexpensive to maintain and doesn't require a lot of work lookafter, then a Lovebird may be the perfect pet for you. The amount of human involvement changes somewhat though, if these birds are left to a small cage where they require more of your time
