Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire make up the ABC Islands which comprise the Leeward Antilles, the southern part of a chain known as the Lesser Antilles. In October of 2010, the island ceased to be a part of the Netherlands Antilles and became a special municipality of the Netherlands.

Tourism drives the economy. What separates Bonaire from other areas is the superb diving and snorkeling. The sea water surrounding the island is protected as a marine park. The waters are unspoiled and warm. The low amount of rainfall makes for calm and clear diving experiences. Wind surfers also flock to the island for the large waves and gusts of wind necessary for their sport.

A total of 2700 hectares are protected as an official marine park. A dazzling array of fish such as parrot fish, angel fish and peacock eye flounder can be clearly viewed and enjoyed. More sea life such as dolphins and seahorses can be seen a bit further into the sea.

The Caquetios Indians, a part of the Arawak were the first to inhabit the island. Archaeological finds and rock paintings have been discovered that date back to 1000 AD. These finds depict the Caquetios and their life. In 1499, the Europeans came. The island, known then as the "Island of Brazilwood" can be found on a map dated 1500.

The Spanish arrived in 1526. They set up cattle plantations and tasked natives to work them. They also brought goats, donkeys and sheep. The Eighty Years War began when the Dutch arrived in 1621. Ultimately, the Dutch were able to establish plantations for the Dutch West India Company.

During World War II, the British and the United States served as protectors. The United States established an air force base that would become the Flamingo Airport which is still in use today as a civilian airport. Post war development saw the resurgence of the salt plans and the opening of an oil terminal. Tourism began to grow with the opening of hotels.

Tourism has continued to grow. Many visitors have purchased BONAIRE REAL ESTATE and made their first or second homes on the island. Bonaire has become paradise found for many divers, snorkelers and wind surfers.
