Selecting The Right Parrots As Pets - Family - Pets

There is a general belief that buying or owning parrots as pets is a lifelong commitment. It is almost considered similar to getting a new puppy. That's because, a parrot will demand all your care and attention at least in the initial few days. The owners have to be particularly involved in caring for the parrot to create that bonding between pet and owner.

Most parrots live long so it is only good to have them as pets if you have the necessary set-up in place. Another factor that should be borne in mind is that parrots live long, some to over 70 years. Therefore, it is a life term commitment. and should not be taken lightly.

Parrots are emotional creatures and it might be difficult to understand their behavior on occasions. For example they are known to sulk, or at times, demand attention. Understanding parrot behavior will help you adapt to their requirements.

Selecting the right parrot from the various species is another task that is not easy to accomplish. It has been observed that cockatoos, conures, lovebirds, parakeets, cockatiels and budgies can be great as pets. Large parrots like the Amazons, the African grays and the Macaws can be equally as good, but perhaps more demanding.

When selecting a parrot as a pet, a few things have to be considered. The first thing is that you should consider the people living in the house. If you have kids at home, buying large parrots like the macaws or the amazons is not recommended as they can cause harm to the children. Another thing to understand is that you cannot have a parrot as pet if you have other pets at home especially cats or dogs.

The next thing to consider is your neighborhood. Parrots tend to make loud noises which could disturb your neighbors. In such cases, you can choose to have smaller specie such as lovebirds, parrotlets or budgies. Birds that are smaller and have lesser ability to scream. Large birds, though make loud noises, are more intelligent and entertaining than the smaller ones.

That being said, the fact remains that parrots are very sensitive birds. They need to be maintained with intense care. If you have planned on getting a parrot home, it will help you if you are well-equipped with all your preparations.

As with all birds they all need to be fed, watered and cleaned out. These tasks can be consuming, and are required on a regular basis.

Considered the fun part of parrots, is the training of them to speak. Not all parrots will mimic or do tricks, and generally the African Gray is the best speaker.

Parrots as pets is a life long commitment which can bring you much joy, but the commitment must be there in order to ensure that they are well looked after.
