Cairns Wildlife Dome - Travel - Travel Tips

Located not far from the Cairns pier and in the vicinity of many Cairns hotels is the Cairns Wildlife Dome. The popular attraction is enclosed by a 20 metre high wall that makes it appropriate for all weather conditions. The biggest draw here is the reptiles and such there is an impressive collection of these cold-blooded creatures to see. Most of the animals here are ones that you might find in rainforests, which is of course what Cairns is famous for.

The Cairns Wildlife Dome is especially enjoyable for young children and visiting the park is a great way to introduce them to the biological sciences. There are several different and fun shows scheduled throughout the day to make the trip even more exciting. You can join the feeding tour either early morning just after the park opens or in the afternoon having had some lunch. You and your loved ones will be able to walk around with the zoo's caretakers and feed some of the animals during the regularly scheduled meal times. You can also learn more about the behaviour and habits of certain animals such as the native koala.

If you or a loved one is a fan of birds you will also want to join that feeding tour as well as the Bird Banter Show. The Bird Banter Show takes place mid-morning at around 10.30am and boasts some of the most colourful and interesting birds in Australia. The Eclectius Parrot is featured here, as is the Laughing Kookaburra, which is indigenous to Australia.

Straight after the Bird Banter Show is the Reptile Rap Show, which features a number of different snakes, lizards and crocodiles. The Reptile Rap Show gives guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with creatures that you might normally fear having in your own garden. You can learn about how exactly snakes go about killing and digesting their prey as well as the unique traits of the blue-tongued lizard.

For a truly memorable experience try getting your picture taken with an adorable and cuddly little koala bear. You can meet with the koala trainers and learn about the bear's habits and living environment. You will then have the opportunity to hold the koala bear and have a picture taken. The prices are quite reasonable for this once in a lifetime experience.

The Furry Friends Mammal Show is also a great experience for mammal lovers. Since many of these animals are nocturnal during the day, the show doesn't begin until late afternoon. You can get front row views and possibly some first hand experience with small rodents, a possum and even a bettong and bandicoot, two unique animals native to Australia.

Entrance to the Cairns Wildlife Dome is $22 AUD for adults and $11 AUD for children. You can also get a special package deal on entry and photographs for $37 and $27 AUD respectively. Another feature of the entry fee is that it is good for re-entry for up to a four additional days. You can visit the animals and see the shows as much as you like during your Cairns holiday making it a truly special place to visit for animal lovers and children.

Cairns Wildlife Dome is fairly easy to find as it is located near the wharf and is close to the Reef Hotel Casino. Going places in Australia is mainly done by private vehicle, so you may want to consider renting a car while you are in town. This is also highly recommended, as there are numerous beautiful and amazing road trips to be taken along the Australian coast. The view fro around the Cairns wildlife Dome is also quite stunning and is the perfect place to stop for lunch or afternoon coffee.
