Teaching Your Parrot New Tricks - Family - Pets

Compared to other birds, parrots are among the smartest. When tested for their intellectual prowess they have ranked quite highly, mirroring the intelligence of a young child. Given this aptitude, many parrot owners decide to teach their birds tricks. As well as being entertaining, parrots that are taught tricks also seem to be better behaved and happier overall.

There are some basic guidelines to follow when teaching parrots to perform tricks. First, teaching sessions should be fairly brief. If the birds are overworked they will not enjoy the lessons and resist learning. The sessions should also use positive reinforcement and rewards for the birds, even if their performance falls a little short. Any noises and other distractions will hamper the learning process, so choose a quiet and private area. The room should also be very well lit, and comfortable for both your parrot and yourself. Be patient and kind when teaching parrots, any stress or negativity will result in sub-par learning.

A good beginning trick to teach parrots is to simply step up. It is an easy and practicle thing for your bird to learn, and will start the teaching off the right way. Simply coach your parrot to step up onto whatever object is in front of it. This can be done by placing your fingers in front of your parrot and gently asking him to step up. Your forearm can be used for larger birds. Food is always an effective reward and enticement for behavior. Have the parrot step up to receive a treat!

Another easy and common parrot trick involves teaching your parrot to turn around. Offer your parrot something to eat while shes standing on her perch. As she reaches out to eat it, rotate the food toward her back so she has to turn around to eat it. Some birds will do this quite easily, while others will need to be coaxed a bit more. When your parrot completes a full turn, food and affection should be offered. Many parrot owners encourage their parrots to speak to minimize the loud squawking that is part of the parrots usual vernacular. The vocalization of words is usually found to be more pleasant by bird owners. Start off with a simple one or two syllable word. You can start with your name, her name, or a simple greeting like hello. Repeat the word often to the bird, and she will start to mimic the sound. When the parrot responds, give her food and encouragement. The first attempts may be quite a butchered version of the word, keep in mind that the point is to get them to start responding to your voice. Repeat the desired word often until your parrot gets the pronunciation down.

Teaching parrots new tricks - Family - Pets

The parrots are birds of that kind which are naturally tuned to learn. Their intelligence is tuned for learning and it is easy to train parrots many tricks. Most of the people train parrots because they want to show it to their friends. The parrots can be taught many tricks very easily and here are a few of them for you to start with. 'Step up' is a trick that is easy to teach and parrots will learn it quickly. In this trick you teach your parrot to step up when you say so. The parrot steps up on something when you say this word. It is natural for the parrots to step up so it will take very little time to train your parrot to do so.

When you are teaching your parrot makes sure that the parrot associates these words with the action. To do this you will need to repeat the words over and over again until you feel that the parrot has associated it with the action.

The parrots can turn their head 360 degrees. You can teach them to do this when you utter a certain command. This trick is named as 'turn around'. You can easily train parrots to do this as this is also a natural thing that the parrot is actually able to do by natural instincts. All you need to do is to move the treat 360 degrees around the parrot so that he looks at the treat. When he will do this, he will be turning his head 360 degrees. Once he learns that, associate a word to the action and with time the parrot will do the rotation when the word is uttered.

The third trick is most difficult of the three tricks. This trick is simple but most difficult to teach. You will be teaching your parrot to come on command. The parrot will come to you when you will command him. This may sound way too simple but it is not the case in reality. To train parrots this trick, you will have to utter a word when offering him the treat while keeping the treat at a distance. The parrot will come to it. With practice and time, the parrot will be trained to do this trick as he will develop the association with the word.

You And Your Parrot Can Have Fun With Parrot Tricks - Family - Pets

Copyright (c) 2010 Kaye Dennan

Parrots are very intelligent birds and if they know lots of tricks they can keep themselves occupied when the owner is not around to play games with them. This is why they are so popular as a pet. It is so much fun seeing the result of all your parrot training as the parrot shows off his new tricks.

Parrot tricks are great for your pet parrot because if the owner is not around they can become quite lonely and bored which is not good for their health. They are flock birds and if they do not have a companion in the cage with them then they need to be taught tricks so that they do not become upset and unwell. A happy parrot is a good companion.

Here is something that can be taught to a pet parrot.

One of the first tricks to teach a parrot is to "step up". This is simply getting the parrot to step onto your finger (or arm if it is a larger bird). Extend your finger in front of the parrot's feet and ask it to "step up". Repeat this command several times in a calm, soothing voice so as not to frighten the bird. If necessary, hold some food in front of the bird, out of reach so that it will move forward. Once the bird has done what is expected of it, give it a treat.

Getting the parrot to "turn around" is another trick that can be learnt quite quickly. The idea is to get the parrot to do a full turn on the perch. To start this trick, hold a piece of food to the side of the parrot so that it has to turn its head. Ask it to "turn around" and as it reaches for the food move it behind the bird so that it turns completely around on the perch. Once it has turned around, give it a treat.

Over time your parrot will gain more confidence and he will do all sorts of tricks of his own. The tricks that they get up to will depend on the type of toys that you give them. They have really inquisitive minds and like small children, they will find things to do with new toys.

Teaching a parrot to talk.

One of the very important steps when teaching a parrot to talk is to talk loudly clearly. Each syllable needs clear pronunciation so that the parrot can hear and be able to mimic the sounds.

It is best to teach the parrot only a few words at a time otherwise they will get confused, and also it is best if there is only one teacher. This way the parrot gets used to the vocal sounds and is not confused by the different accents and voice tone.

Regardless whether you are teaching your parrot tricks or to talk, the parrot will absolutely love the interaction and all the attention. You can bet that all that praise you give him will not be lost and he will just love it.

Parrot Birds Tips - Choosing a Cage for the Parrot - Home

If you have a desire to keep a parrot at your home, then the foremost contemplation should be an enclosure where it is to be kept. Keep in mind that the habitat of the parrot directly influences its health. It should be obvious that every parrot possessor will like to keep the parrot in an enclosure. But remember that the cage should be spacious as it requires good space to live in. This will help in the growth of the parrot.

When you are going to buy a cage then always look for a good and right dimension. This should be understood that all types of parrot cannot be kept in the similar cage. The specie of the parrot also determines which type of an enclosure you should have. So, before you buy a parrot it should be well understood that which type of cage should be selected so that the parrot can be kept in their satisfactorily.

There are many varieties of cages with so many different sizes which you can wonder. But, the specie of the parrot very much affects the type and the size of the cage. For instance, the specie of a parrot like an African Grey or the Blue Crown Conjure requires a cage with a size of 18x18x18 inch. Also for an Eclectic Parrot and the Senegal Parrot, the same dimensions mentioned above would be perfect. In this way different parrots have varying cage dimensions.

The dimensions of an enclosure may vary with the specie of many parrots. For instance, for the parrots like the Amazon Parrot, the Quaker Parrot or the Macaws the cage dimensions of about 30x30x30 inch would work. Also, for the Umbrella Cockatoos, some dimension of about 36x30x72 inch would be ok. For a Conjure a cage with size measurement of around 20x20x24 inch would be fine in order to keep your parrot cheerful, relaxed and healthy.

There are many kinds of parrots seen and they too have distinct sizes of an enclosure. If you keep the Coffin Cockatoo as a pet then the cage should have a preferable size of around 48x36x48 inch. The same dimensions would also be good for the Moluccas Cockatoo. Now for the Rose Breasted Cockatoo then you should go for the cage dimensions of around 36x36x36 inch. The parrots which are small in nature can stay in an enclosure of around 18x22x24 inches. For instance the parrot Quaker Parakeet is of this type. For different other tiny species like Cockatiels and Budgies the cage dimensions of around 18x18x24 inches and 20x12x18 inches respectively would be fine. Remember that the entrance of the cage should be good and big so that the parrot can enter and exit from the cage easily.

The devices that you use while serving food and water to the parrots also play an important role other than the cage dimensions. You must keep things such as cups to serve water to the parrots and also toys so that the parrot can catch these things from inside of the cage very easily.

Choosing a Parrot - Do you need a Parrot Breeder? - Family - Pets

If you are thinking about adopting a parrot then one of the first decisions after you have settled on which species of parrot you think is right for you will be where do you turn in order to get him or her. At this point you have 4 main choices and some are better than others. The choices are going to one or more parrot breeders, the local pet store, a bird rescue center and lastly and very rarely you may come across a private sale.

Generally parrots have a high intelligence and complex characters which is why we are drawn to them in the first place but this also means that they require the proper care and attention from birth, through their formative years and into adulthood to ensure that they grow up well balanced, healthy, happy and without behavioral problems. Parrots have a tendency to get stressed if there is any change in either there environment or day to day routine so the initial trip home after the purchase and the first few days in your home will be stressful for your new family member but there are steps you can take to minimize this.

The more information you can get on your potential parrot before you do adopt, the better with this knowledge you can facilitate the transition easier for your new parrot into their new home surroundings and routine.

If you choose the local pet store it is very unlikely that you will receive any real detailed information on your particular parrot as they will often not have any information available or you may be served by someone who is just working at the store for the pay check and actually has no interest in parrots or any other pets. Obviously this is not always the case and there are plenty of pet stores where all of the employees are knowledgeable and helpful but you as the purchaser need to be aware of all of the possible scenarios.

Another option is the local rescue center where you may find a perfectly healthy and happy parrot but you must take into consideration that you will rarely find a young parrot at a rescue center and their is a higher probability that the parrot will have behavioral issues resulting from his previous treatment, whether from poor care, diet or environment. Again this may not be the case but it is hard to have proof of the history of a parrot from a rescue center.

The third option which is very rare is a private sale from an individual which is similar to the rescue center option with the benefit of meeting the person who has cared for the parrot and have a chance to see the parrots' surroundings but again the negative here is the lack of experience of the private vendor.

The fourth option is to go to a parrot breeder to choose a parrot. You will have the option to question the breeder extensively on how they have reared the parrot, including feeding the parrot, from weaning the parrot, which needs to be performed by an experienced handler through to feeding solid food and the type of food chosen as well as asking when they introduced bathing to the baby parrot, the best time being when they are partially feathered. Another benefit of a reputable breeder is that they will often make themselves available after the purchase to answer any questions and queries that may arise in the first few weeks for you as a parrot owner.

Overall there may be merits for each of the options I have described for adopting your parrot but the major advantage that a breeder has over the other 3 is that you can have proof of the parrots history and you have access to ask all of the questions that you need to ask before purchase and in doing so you raise the probability that you will adopt a happy healthy parrot free of any behavioral issues.

Parrot Care Information - Other

Attracted to their magnificent colors, their adoring personalities, and their high intelligence, people have been drawn to adopt parrots into their lives for generations. Caring for these birds in a home environment does involve a few challenges but, with proper care, parrots make wonderful pets.

Different species of parrots require different care but, for all parrots, proper nutrition is vital in maintaining a good quality of life. Most parrot diets are very similar. In general, parrot diets consist of fresh fruits and vegetables, parrot pellets, and a high quality of vitamin enriched parrot seed mix. Owners also need to change their parrots water every day.

Although birds are typically considered a "dirty" pet to own, it is very important to keep parrots' cages clean. Perches, dishes and other surfaces of the cage should be cleaned daily with water and mild soap. Cleaning products like ammonia, mold and mildew cleaner, and bleach can irritate or burn a parrot's skin, eyes and reparatory tract. The bird's cages themselves also need to be inspected for unsafe situations like sharp points in the metal.

Cleanliness is also important when it comes to handling your parrot. Owners need to wash their hands frequently when they are working with birds, handling their dishes, and preparing their meals in order to prevent bacterial infections. Human saliva also contains bacteria that are harmful to parrots so owners should never allow their birds to place its beak in their owner's mouths or noses. The size of the cage is vital to a parrot's well-being. The parrot should be able to spread its wings within its cage. There should also be room enough to hand two to four safe parrot toys.

Parrots have the capability of forming very strong bonds with their human owners. In general, smaller parrots can have a lifespan of 15 to 30 years and larger parrots can live between 40 to 50 years. Owning a parrot is a lifelong commitment. Socialization is vital in maintaining a high quality of life for parrots. Their cage should be placed in an area where the families spend a lot of their time and are able to interact with the bird. The kitchen does not make an ideal spot for the cage because of the risk of toxic chemicals while cooking and other dangers.

When most people think about parrot care they don't consider grooming. Parrots do require a decent amount of grooming throughout their entire lives. Their nails and beaks never stop growing. These can be clipped every three to four weeks. Overgrown nails can get caught on perches or toys. Most bird owners also have their birds wings clipped every few weeks to prevent flight. In the wild, parrots take rain showers to keep their feathers in good condition. Owners can bath or mist their parrots daily with clean, fresh water using a water bottle.

Parrots are playful, affectionate, and super smart. Owners need to understand the extreme importance of their needs and how to meet each one. With proper care parrots will thrive in a home environment.

Parrot Birds Tips - Are You Facing Trouble With The Conduct Of The Parrot That You Bought? - Family - Pets

If you got a pet that is a parrot, you should be aware that a parrot by nature cannot be a domestic bird. Parrot is actually a bird that belongs to the wild and like each and every wild animal; it has got characters that need to be disciplined. As a result, parrot will not act similar to any other wild bird the moment it is caught. However, parrots are not similar to other wild animals in the manner that the moment they are caught, they easily get accustomed to new environment of theirs.

All parrots like to be at ease and like to experience some kind of leisure. Therefore, they love to live in closed cages which give these parrots more than sufficient room for their ease. To this you always need to add some common objects for playing and a mix of different foodstuff that will be liked by the parrot.

These things are very much required if you desire to your parrot to spend and live a happy and normal life. If you do not have these, you parrot will be inclined to act out of characteristics and as the time past, your parrot will build up those irrational characteristics. There are many different ways through which the parrot's presence can be known. Given below are some ways through which you can sense the occurrence of parrots with ease:

A parrot will all the time clatter very much. They love to shriek uncontrollably and loudly. This however is not obvious all the period. In many cases, screaming and shrieking is normally experienced at the wee hours of the morning and in afternoon time. Always remember that like other animals, this is performed either as a symbol to show that they are active or to show other parrots or point out that they are set for breeding. But, when this activity is done at an unbearable level and almost the entire day, then you should understand that something is wrong with your parrot. In few cases, the parrot can use this to signal and show that everything is not right. Once you identify this change, you need to take due care of it and ensure that it should not become a habit for the parrot.

Yet another dilemma that needs to be tackled is the unnecessary crushing. Chewing on the food and other playing objects is considered normal for a parrot. But if this chewing is performed in an uncontainable manner it turns into a problem. However, this is normal when you just bring the parrot from the wild outside. This problem can be tackled by giving some good objects to play on which parrot can chew easily. This will immensely help the parrot to get use to its new environment.

The parrots also enjoy selecting their feathers. They often perform this when they feel uncomfortable. To solve this issue, you should know what is bothering the parrot to make him do this. Always keep in mind that understanding the root cause of any issue is considered as solving the issue half-way.

Love Your Parrot? Learn the Benefits Of Organic Parrot Food - Food

Your parrot's diet is an essential factor in their life. What they eat affects all aspects of their health and development. Their health is obviously affected by what they eat because food contains nutrients to help them grow and thrive. But did you know your parrot's mental and emotional health is also affected by their diet? It's the same for humans. When we eat bad food, we feel bad. It affects our mood, our decisions, and our behavior, not to mention our health. And like you, your parrot will benefit from eating organic parrot food.

Organic Parrot Food Is Free Of Carcinogens

Many top level parrot foods have some serious chemicals in them - chemicals that have absolutely nothing to do with food or improving your parrot's health. In fact, these chemicals can and do cause cancer. Here are a few of the items found in most non-organic parrot foods.

* Ethoxyquin - this is used as a food stabilizer and a pesticide.* BHA - Butylated hydroxyanisole is a food preservative that has been shown to be a carcinogen (cancer cause).* BHT - Butylated hydroxytoluene is another food preservative and carcinogen. Both BHA and BHT are difficult for humans to metabolize and next to impossible for a parrot's sensitive system to manage.* Menadione - A vitamin K supplement is extremely toxic. It has been reported to cause anemia, brain or liver damage, or neonatal death humans and is toxic for birds and yet many parrot foods contain this toxic element.

Organic Parrot Foods Don't Contain Added Sugar

Would you feed your parrot sugar cubes? No, of course not, right? Sugar isn't something your bird needs nor does it improve their health, behavior or happiness. Yet most parrot foods contain sugar. They, for some reason, feel the need to sweeten the food. (Probably to cover up the taste of all those pesticides and preservatives.)

Your parrot doesn't need added sugar and good organic parrot foods don't contain any added sugar, flavorings, or food colorings.

Organic Parrot Food Lengthens Your Parrot's Lifespan

A seed based diet is too fatty for most birds to handle and it's short on nutrients. A seed based diet can cause:

* Fatty Liver Disease, * Kidney Failure, * Feather Plucking Issues * Overgrown Beaks * Blindness * Epileptic Seizures (Mostly Common In African Greys, And Cockatoos) * Inability to Fly* Chronic sickness

An organic pelletparrot food can lengthen the life of your parrot by several years. Actually, it can triple your parrot's lifespan. Why? Because it offers 100% nutrition without the unnecessary extras like fat, sugar and chemicals.

Organic Parrot Food Is Easier to Get Than Ever Before

A few years ago, organic parrot food was next to impossible to find. It was also incredibly expensive, not to mention the shipping cost was exorbitant. That's not the case anymore. More people are aware of the benefits making it easier to find.

If you want to offer your parrot the best you can possibly offer, organic parrot food is the way to go. It's 100% good for your bird and helps you give them the life, love and health they deserve.

Understanding What To Do So That You Have A Healthy Parrot - Family - Pets

Copyright (c) 2010 Kaye Dennan

There are many phases to looking after a pet parrot so that it is a healthy parrot, and most importantly in that mix is the parrot diet. Parrot owners need to be aware of what it takes to see that pet parrots get the correct healthy diet and what other steps need to be taken to ensure that the other factors for a healthy life a met.

But having a healthy parrot goes beyond just the diet because there is also the mental aspect of keeping a parrot healthy. Parrots are a bird that is active during the day and which sleeps all night. This means that the parrot will need some day time stimulation for his mental well being. They are not birds that like to be on their own all day long.

How to care for your parrot's health.

There are several precautions that a parrot owner should take in the best interest of their parrot and they are:

- Keep the parrot out of drafts

- Feed the parrot at the correct time of day and with the correct balanced diet

- Keep the parrot out of the kitchen so that he is not exposed to kitchen fumes, and also to prevent any accidents from hot items in the kitchen

- Don't spray any aerosols near him

I always found it helpful when I got my first parrot to remember to compare the size of the parrot's nostrils, eyes, and throat, etc to my own. I realised that if I sneeze at a particular aerosol spray, it must be affecting my parrot so much more because of its smaller size. I found that this constant comparison soon had me changing many habits that I used to take for granted before I bought him.

There are ways to tell if your bird is not well and these are:

- The appearance of his feathers

- He is not acting the way he normally does

- He is using areas in his cage that he usually avoids going to

- He may be messier than usual when he is eating his food - He may be standing in a strange way

- He perdhes on his two feet instead of the one foot that he usually does

- He does not show any interest in anything

- He's not as active as he normally is

These seem to be small symptoms but any one of them would indicate that your bird is not feeling the best, so keep a very strict eye on him.

Keeping your bird actively stimulated and fed well with the right mix of food types will give him the best chance of having a long and healthy life. Most is important is the fact that a parrot needs to feed every day, so if you notice that he does not touch his food one day then a trip to the vet is essential and the quicker the better.

How To Include Protein In A Parrot's Diet - Family - Pets

Copyright (c) 2010 Kaye Dennan

Not surprisingly, parrots need to have a varied diet so that they can maintain good health. So what is a good healthy diet for a parrot? It is a diet that, amongst other things, covers a wide range of vitamins and nutrients. Parrots rely on their owners to feed them a range of food that will incorporate the necessary ingredients for good health. They need a balanced diet and they need it all week long.

Parrots need various nutrients so that:

- their feathers regrow

- their beaks stay strong

- their nails regrow

- they maintain general good health

Protein in the diet.

Parrots need proteins as they are a muscle growth and repair nutrient. Like all creatures, there will be certain times when parrots need repair to their bodies and also muscle growth so it is essential that they have the protein to rebuild. Just as an example, their beaks and claws will constantly be in a state of repair.

Proteins are comprised of amino acids, known as the "building blocks" and are divided into two groups, the essential and the non-essential. Non-essential amino acids are those that the body itself manufactures. Essential amino acids are those which the body cannot manufacture. These need to be supplied in the parrot diet. For parrots, there are a minimum of ten essential amino acids. They include: lysine, tryptophan, isoleucine, arginine, methionine, phenylalanine, leucine, threonine and valine.

Proteins are classified as either 'complete' or 'incomplete' and this on whether the particular food has a full complement of amino acids or only some of them. An example would be corn which has protein, but only a few of them so therefore corn is a poor source of protein and considered 'incomplete'.

Excellent sources of protein.

Eggs are one of the top sources for amino acids and many professional nutritionists regard them as a complete meal in themselves.

Beans are also an excellent source of amino acids and a popular food to feed parrots is fresh beans, peas and other legumes. Bean shoots are also loved by most parrots. They are sweet, fleshy and very nutritious.

Meat and dairy products are also a good source of protein for the parrot and the meat is best served raw.

A healthy parrot diet.

Variety is the key. By breaking the weekly diet down to 40% pellets, 10% grain and 50% other the parrot is going to be receiving what he needs to be healthy. The '50% other' can be broken down even further and here are 3 suggestions:

1. Chopped greens, chopped vegetables, cooked beans, grains and legumes as well as fruit, whole grain pasta

2. three different cooked grains, along with shredded or chopped sweet potatoes, carrots, squash or pumpkin. He then adds other shredded vegetables and ground nuts in this meal for some variety.

3. Bread that is homemade and created especially for parrots.

To ensure that your pet parrot is going to be around for a long time, and some breeds can live up to 80 years, feed a healthy parrot diet twice a day every day of the week to your beloved feathered friend.

Every time the bird does something correctly or acts in a definite way, the trainer does the click, which is immediately followed by a tasty treat. So you see, it works two-ways " firstly, the parrot knows that he/she has done something correctly, and it thereby encouraged to continue, and secondly, it can link the success with a treat.

Clicker Training Represents Brain Gym For Your Parrot

Just as humans cannot live by bread alone, needing something else to stir the gray matters, animals and birds prove no exception too. An intelligent and sizable bird like a parrot or a cockatoo may become bored unless it has something witty and interesting to play with. As humans enjoy solving cross-word puzzles, birds also get pleasure from hitting on the right point during a clicker session. It stimulates their natural desire to figure things out, thereby enriching their ability to learn more.

"Bridge" Solves The Communication Gap

People researching clicker training often come across the word "Bridge", which in realty means a conduit between the trainer and the trainee. The bridge is also the signal for the parrot to know it has hit the right point, while the clicking noise is the indication that tempting food items are following behind. In fact, it is the positive reinforcement for the bird to associate right solution with alluring olives or tempting walnuts.

Wait For The 'Behavior'

The fundamentals of clicker training include the behavior of the trainee parrot. You may have to wait for the behavior to occur. Undesirable behavior may be ignored or treated with a warning sign for the bird to start all over again. But if you find that such undesired behaviors are rising rapidly, you must discontinue clicker training at once as otherwise, the parrot will become perpetually averse to the training procedure.

Food Reward And Clicker Training

To train your pet parrot or for that matter any other animal, it is essential that you offer prizes, and food is of course the most important prize always. After all, unlike us humans, no other species are materially concerned " to them, food represents the most important thing " the other important things being shelter and sex.

So now matter how you are training your parrot, you must always offer food rewards whenever the bird does something correctly or follows your order accurately. This is true for clicker training as well. For a parrot a good treat can be seeds and nuts. And the best time to train your pet might be just before feeding time because your parrot is sure to feel hungry and is more likely to follow your orders if it can associate food with performance.

Good luck with your beloved parrot.

Kind regardsAndre

Teaching a Parrot to Talk - Family - Pets

What fascinates humans about parrots is their ability to communicate with them. Parrots can sometimes become annoying with their screaming but this only happens when they are agitated. Parrots are very intelligent creatures with the ability to perfect the mimicking art. Teaching a parrot to talk is a process that requires patience as it may take longer than expected. It is even advisable to buy them without the notion of a talking genius in mind. This way, people will keep frustrations at bay as well as the risk of abandoning the poor bird. The environment in which a parrot may learn to talk is where it spends much time with humans only. This way, it will get used to routine and end up picking the sounds and words that people utter. Other talking parrots are a positive influence on the parrot and it may soon learn to talk through imitating its mates. A parrot will also learn to talk faster if it belongs to a species that is known to talk. Talking parrots include burgies, th e African parrot, and parakeets. For a parrot to pick voices fast, it is advisable to keep him in the kitchen where family members are known to congregate and talk over meals. Parrots love airy places full of light, food, and color and the kitchen makes a conducive school for it. The more familiar a parrot is with its surrounding the faster it will be for it to learn how to talk. Helping the parrot overcome its shyness is a great step and this involves keeping off until it is confident enough. Bold parrots are supposed to be given lots of attention, as they are receptive from the start. The ideal age to start giving the parrot talking lessons is between 4 and 6 months. It is advisable to star with simple words such as 'good morning'. This must happen repeatedly for it to stick in the parrot's memory. Patience is epitome since some are slow and may take a long time before they can utter a sound. It is important to have the parrot close to the mouth during these lessons to ensur e its attentiveness. Other favorable words include names of family members as well as expressions such as 'thank you', 'goodbye,' and 'good day' among others.Parrots love excitement and if they pick it in your voice, they will definitely be happy to repeat words after you. For the parrot to associate an action with a word, it is important to utter the word while performing the action. In instances where the parrot mimics you successfully, rewards are in order, as they require motivation. Teaching a parrot to talk may also involve playing recorded phrases for them repeatedly. They hate monotony and the longest these phrases should run is 15 minutes. The diet also counts when it comes to teaching a parrot how to talk. Parrots that feed on pellets are better performers overall. To wean them out of the usual seed diet, it is advisable to mix the pellets with the seeds.

Do Parrot Macaws Make Good Pets? - Family - Pets

Over the years, parrot macaws have become more popular as pets for bird owners, but there is concern in keeping this species, as the parrot macaw is not for first time parrot owners. First, you'll notice the number of macaws being sold in the marketplace at the moment. Most do not understand or recognize the amount of time and investment required to properly care for their macaw.

It seems as if it is the mesmerizing and vibrant feather colors of the parrot macaw which has people considering them as pets, but too often, these birds are purchased as an impulse buy without much consideration to the long term care of responsibilities.

In order to properly train your parrot macaw, it will take time and care to build the relationship with your bird in order to reap the love, care, and devotion. It can be the most gratifying work, but can stress some owners out in the process.

The process begins with purchasing your parrot from a reputable and dedicated breeder who has hand fed their parrots. Breeder commitment and dedication makes the best-behaved companions when they mature. By hand feeding your parrot from a very early age, this represents to them that you are part of their flock and a recognized part of the macaw's family, which is very important in your relationship with your parrot macaw.

It can be a real challenge to train and tame a parrot macaw which was not hand fed as a baby, as many will never become as loving or gentle viewing you as part of the flock the way hand fed chicks will behave. Extra attention either you or your breeder provides your parrot from birth will go a long way to create a well natured and trainable bird.

Most new parrot macaw owners don't fully understand the importance of continued socialization by the breeder or owner. You'll want to ensure that before you buy a macaw, you understand the level of care and time spent by the breeder prior to bringing the macaw home.

The socialization process for macaws must be implemented for life. When left to themselves, macaws can easily revert to their previous poor behavior habits. They can also resort to feather plucking, aggressive behavior, and other destructive behaviors.

When proper time and effort is spent, owning and training parrot macaws can be one of the most rewarding experiences as having any other pet. Domesticating a macaw can be a very personal task with much heartfelt bonding.

If you tend to travel for business or are not home with any kind of frequency, this may not be a good pet. The parrot macaw demands your time and attention for both physical needs as well as emotional support. A well-socialized macaw will want to be with you and doing whatever it is you are doing at the moment. Macaws can become amazing companions and make a colorful edition to your home with your commitment. This loving relationship and experience can last a lifetime.

4 Steps to Buying a Parakeet Parrot Birdcage - Family - Pets

The parakeet parrot is one of the most popular and sought after types of parrots. When many people speak about owning a pet parrot, they think of a parakeet. Parakeets are small to medium in size and have long tails. If you're considering a parakeet parrot as a pet, there are some important factors to consider when purchasing their birdcage to ensure happy and healthy birds.

You'll want to consider the following when selecting a parakeet's birdcage:

Birdcage Size

Generally speaking, parakeet parrots can be smaller than most other types of parrots, but they should still live in a decent size birdcage no smaller than 24" x 16" x 16". Your pet parakeets will require space to spread their wings. You'll also need to consider your birds wingspan when purchasing a new cage. It is bad for your parakeet to have their wings or tail brush against the cage when they try to extend their wings. This has both a physical and mental effect on the birds over time. It is best to purchase the largest birdcage you can afford and have space for in your home.

Due to the fact that parakeet parrots enjoy nesting with one another, you can keep two or three parakeets in a larger cage. Some parakeet cages have many water and feeding bowls to accommodate for many parakeets. It is, however, important to not have parakeets living with other kinds of parrots to prevent behavioral issues.

Birdcage Shape

It is important to remember that parakeets enjoy and benefit more from cages which are wider than taller since parakeet parrots tend to fly back and forth more than up and down. If your cage is too tall, the space in the upper part of the cage can be wasted, but if you install perches or branches in the cage, this can encourage climbing. Having a wide cage in which one side is against the wall makes the parakeet most comfortable. Interestingly enough, experts have said that a round cage isn't ideal for parakeets. Birdcage Bars

Since parakeets tend to be a smaller variety of parrots, you'll want bars on your birdcage that are not spaced more than 0.5" apart. If the spaces are any wider, your parakeet will be tempted to push their head though with the potential of getting stuck. Some experts say that it is recommended that the parakeet parrot birdcage have one or two cage walls that have horizontal bars instead of vertical bars to give them the opportunity to climb.

Birdcage Material

It has been said that stainless steel birdcages is the best material for your parakeet, along with wrought iron and cold rolled steel. The reason stainless steel is so popular is that it is easy to maintain and tends to resist rust. Certain materials can be toxic for your parakeet parrot such as lead, galvanized steel, zinc, and brass. Since parakeets enjoy exploring and chewing, they could have the potential to ingest metal or have metal flakes get in their eyes. You'll want to seek out a birdcage that is naturally treated rather than ones with too many chemicals added.

Taking these four tips to heart when searching for and purchasing your new parakeet parrot birdcage will help you make the safe and most comforting decision for your bird.

Eclectus Parrot - News - Business News

DescriptionMale Eclectus Parrot, Melbourne Zoo, AustraliaFemale E. r. vosmaeri at North Carolina Zoo. No other subspecies combines a purple abdomen and clear yellow undertail covertsA pet juvenile male. The upper mandible has a brown base and yellow tip, and the irises are dark brown/blackThe Eclectus Parrot is unusual in the parrot family for its marked sexual dimorphism in the colours of the plumage. The male is mostly bright green with blue primaries, and red flanks and underwing coverts, while the female is mostly red with a blue abdomen and nape in most subspecies, purple abdomen and nape in the subspecies from the north and central Maluku Islands (roratus and vosmaeri), and red abdomen and nape in the subspecies from Sumba and Tanimbar Islands (cornelia and riedeli). Females of several subspecies have a yellow-tipped tail; taken to the extreme in riedeli and vosmaeri which also have yellow undertail coverts. The upper mandible of the adult male is orange at the base fading to a yellow towards the tip, and the lower mandible is black. The beak of the adult female is all black. Adults have yellow to orange irises and juveniles have dark brown to black irises. The upper mandible of both male and female juveniles are brown at the base fading to yellow towards the biting edges and the tip. TaxonomyOrnithologists usually classify the Eclectus Parrot as a member of tribe Psittaculini in the Psittacidae family of order Psittaciformes. However, some recent thought indicates that there is a great deal of commonality between the Eclectus Parrot and the Loriinae tribe. The Eclectus Parrot is the most sexually dimorphic of all the parrot species. The contrast between the brilliant emerald green plumage of the male and the deep red/purple plumage of the female is so marked that the two birds were, until the early 20th century, considered to be different species. It is thought that there are nine (possibly ten) subspecies of Eclectus Parrots, with diff erences in size and colouring. In captivity, some of the most common subspecies are the Solomon Island, the Vosmaeri, and the New Guinea Red-sided.Grand Eclectus (Eclectus roratus roratus)Solomon Island Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus solomonensis)New Guinea Red-sided Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus polychloros)Australian Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus macgillivrayi)Vosmaer's Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus vosmaeri)Aru Island Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus aruensis)Westerman's Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus westermani) doubtfully valid.Sumba Island Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus cornelia)Tanimbar Islands Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus riedeli)Biak Island Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus biaki)Although the Eclectus Parrot is the only extant species in the genus Eclectus, fossil remains of another species, Oceanic Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus infectus), have been found in archaeological sites in the islands of Tonga and Vanuatu (Steadman 2006). The species presumably existed in Fiji as well. E. infectus had proportionally smaller wings than the Eclectus Parrot. The species went extinct after the arrival of man 3000 years ago, presumably due to human-caused factors (habitat loss, introduced species). DietThe diet of the eclectus in the wild consists of mainly fruits, wild figs, unripe nuts, flower and leaf buds, and some seeds. Two favorite fruits are the pomegranate and the papaya (pawpaw) with seeds. In captivity, they will eat most fruits including mangos, figs, guavas, bananas, any melons, stone fruits (peaches etc), grapes, citrus fruits, pears and apples. The eclectus has an unusually long digestive tract and this is why it requires such a high fiber diet. In captivity the eclectus parrot does benefit from a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, leafy greens such as endive and dandelion, as well as a variety of seeds, including spray millet, and a few nuts such as shelled almonds and shelled walnuts. AvicultureFemale at Rosamond Gifford Zoo, USEclectus parrots are one of the more popular birds kept in captivity, as either parent or hand reared. Unlike many other species of parrot they are relatively easy to breed yet difficult to hand feed. Eclectus in captivity require vegetables high in beta-carotene, such as lightly cooked sweet potato, fresh broccoli clumps, and fresh corn on the cob. Fresh greens such as endive or commercial dandelion are a very important in providing calcium and other nutrients. As with all pet birds, they should not be fed avocado, chocolate, or high fat junk foods such as French fries or commercially processed human foods such as pizza. Parrots are unable to digest the lactose in milk. Spray millet is one of the seed items they enjoy, though the Eclectus diet should typically contain much less seed than other birds. A variety of soaked and cooked beans and legumes, along with brown rice, provided in limited amounts help provide protein. Nuts and seeds provide vitam in E, but should be limited in order to avoid too much fat in the diet, as Eclectus parrots can become obese.A seven-week old male chick that has been hand reared for the pet trade. The captive Eclectus can be susceptible to muscle spasms known as toe-tapping and wing flipping, while all the causes are not clear, a major cause is a chemical imbalance in vitamins and minerals. These movements have not been observed in the wild. Potential causes include calcium deficiency, consumption of pellets or other foods that are overly fortified with man made vitamins or artificially colored, or even simple dehydration. Fortified or artificial foods may also cause allergic reactions in some individuals, including severe itchiness leading to feather and skin damage.Captive Eclectus parrots are prone to feather destruction (picking, pulling, cutting and or barbing) in captivity. Causes can be difficult to pin down, but diet / health, boredom and hormonal changes are thought to be the cause . Once this behavior begins it is nearly impossible to stop. Often only a mechanical barrier (e-collar) is successful in keeping the afflicted parrot from completely stripping all but its head of feathers. Other captive species that are prone to this behavior are; Cockatoo, African Grey, and to some extent the Macaw. ReferencesBirdLife International (2004). Eclectus roratus. 2006.
