Do You Want A Scarlet Macaw For A Pet Parrot - Family - Pets

A Scarlet Macaw is not a small parrot. They can be as long as 36 inches from the tip of their long slender tails to the top of their heads

Their heads and bodies are red. There is a yellow band on the upper wings along with blue on the tail and wing feathers.

The upper beak of a Scarlet Macaw is white and the lower is black. They sport a featherless, white ring around their eyes.

Some of these macaws have reportedly lived for 75 years, but the typical life span is between 35 and 50 years.

They are a high strung macaw that could develop the habit of biting if their natural tendency to pinch isn't discouraged at an early age.

If you slap your macaw or use any aggressive means to try to teach it not to pinch it will learn to fear you. If it's scared of you it will bite to protect it's self.

A lot of noise and activity will make these high strung parrots nervous. As a rule they aren't great pets for a family with small children.

You don't have to rule them out as a family pet just because of their high strung nature. If you are willing to spend the time teaching your parrot and your children what the appropriate behavior around each other is they can actually learn to play together.

They have a very loud voice and if they get bored they can make a real racket.

It's a mistake to give in to a screaming macaw and give it a treat or a toy to play with in order to get it to be quiet.

Doing these things will only serve to teach your Scarlet Macaw that screaming gets it what it wants.

Reward your macaw for being quiet by giving it some attention and then ignore it when its making a lot of noise.

It will figure out that it gets the attention it wants by being quiet, not by screaming.

All macaws are very intelligent birds, and when they are properly handled they make playful, loving pet parrots.
