Your King Parrot--5 Top Tips for Care - Family - Pets

Knowing how to care for a King Parrot is extremely important to make sure that your bird is healthy, happy and lives a good long life. But because they have unique needs and unexpected requirements, here are 5 tips for successfully caring for this parrot.1. Outside is Best-- One of the first things to consider is where you will keep your King Parrot. If you are looking for a bird that you will be able to keep in the house with you, then this bird is not a good match.

While other exotic birds may be more than happy to live indoors, the King Parrot will do so at a cost--a significant shortage in life expectancy. Why is this? The answer is itself quite surprising - King Parrots don't like the heat. Despite its Australian origins (the Queensland region), this seems all the more surprising; but the truth is that King Parrots kept indoors in the home with all the usual central heating will suffer as a result.2. The Aviary. To make sure that your bird doesn't suffer ill health or die prematurely because of improper surroundings, it is important ask yourself if you are willing to provide an aviary.

A well built aviary outside will prove to be far healthier for your bird, as well as offering a bit more room, and the chance to introduce other birds as well. King Parrots are very amiable birds and won't mind the company of others. If breeding is a goal, wait until after they have produced their off springs before introducing other birds, as the royal couple needs plenty of privacy to produce their young.3. Food-Offer fresh organic fruits and vegetables daily, and supplement with sprouted seeds, a high quality pellet mix, and a constant supply of fresh water.

Remove fresh food from the aviary after several hours to discourage mold growth, and to prevent your bird from eating moldy food, which can cause health problems. Your friend will appreciate an occasional treat of bread, crackers, and even sponge cake. Treat are fine in moderation.Be sure to avoid feeding avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol or foods high in sugar and salt as they can prove to be fatal. One good tip is to try to mirror what the bird would expect to find in the wild, so green fruits, vegetables and leaves are best given more during the summer months, with nuts and berries given in higher volume during the winter months.4. Entertainment--It is very important to make sure your pet is entertained and stimulated as much as possible. Provide plenty of room, with perches, a variety of toys, and several hours a day of your own time and attention.

Regular interaction will ensure that you have a very amiable and loving companion to come home to. A bird that is busy and happy is less likely to indulge in unwanted behaviors such as biting, feather plucking, and screaming.5. Cleaning--The King Parrot will preen regularly, and enjoys a clean environment. Make sure you provide him with water which is separate from his drinking water in which he can clean himself from time to time. Shower perches are an inexpensive option and allow you and your pet to spend even more time together.

Keep soap and other cleaning agents away from them and place the perch so it is out of the direct spray. Turn the nozzle setting to the lowest pressure so that your bird is not frightened or injured. The King Parrot is a cheerful, friendly and entertaining personality, and when treated well will reward you with as many as 15 happy years of companionship.
