Introducing Amboina King Parrots - Family - Pets

The Amboina King Parrot is also known as the Amboina Green Winged Parrot and the Moluccan King Parrot. It is one of the most recognizable parrots you will ever find. Bright red, with green wings and a blue back, the Amboina King Parrot is widely prized for its colorful form. Pictures simply cannot do justice to the vivid display of colors in the bird's wonderful plumage. These parrots may be rare, but seeing them is well worth it.

This parrot is sometimes confused with the Green Winged Parrot or the Australian King Parrot. Though similar, these two species have darker green wings with a distinctive light-green patch. If you're a buyer looking specifically for a particular gender, always keep in mind that since the males and females are identical, the only way to identify their gender is by DNA testing.

Featured on postage stamps in their native Indonesia, the birds can be found on the islands of Moluccas, New Guinea and Amboina. They may soon be designated an official Endangered Species, as their natural habitat has come under serious threat.

The Amboina King Parrot is not considered aggressive, as they are quite comfortable with both humans and other birds. Even so, when cornered or feeling threatened, they can sometimes give a little bite. They can be stubborn and don't avoid eye contact; some owners believe these traits make the birds better learners. Overall, if you're looking for a calm bird who gets along well with its surroundings, these parrots are a great choice. With a soft and gentle voice, they are excellent mimics.

There is some discussion about when these parrots actually reach sexual maturity and are ready for breeding. Though the estimates range from 12 to 30 months, it is a fact that when they have reached sexual maturity, the area around the eyes turns from a whitish-grey to black. Typically, they will produce up to three white eggs, two or three times a year. After fertilization, the eggs will incubate from 20 to 25 days. The young parrots are able to fend for themselves within three months after hatching.

When selecting an appropriate bird cage, remember that the adult Amboina King Parrot can vary in length from 14 to 19 inches, and don't forget to allow for the long tail. Consider a cage that is at least 5 meters by 2 meters to provide enough room for the birds to comfortably move around, stretch their wings, and fly. A nesting box at least 120 centimeters deep is needed if you intend to breed them (not always easy, but always worth the effort once you see the results).

Amboina King Parrots are much like other parrots when it comes to caring for them. They don't need any special consideration, and feeding and maintenance is the same as any other parrot species. Take care, though! With their confident manner and stubbornness, they can be greedy and won't hesitate to eat all the food in their cage, even if it belongs to other birds. Since they are sensitive to iron in their diet, always use pellets that are low in iron, and try and choose vegetables that are low in iron if treating them to some scraps. They can become stressed if they are moved around frequently, so a well-chosen and permanent spot is a good idea.

The Amboina King Parrot is a marvel, with its lilting voice, even temperament, and amazingly vivid colors. Due to its beauty and rarity, it may be an expensive bird, but also a worthwhile addition to any exotic aviary.
